He was grieving for the love/loss of his life, he was roaming the world protecting people and most likely hoping that one day, in one of these night hunts, Wei Wuxian would appear, and he'd get to see his love again, or not. LWJ was probably ready to spend the rest of his life mourning Wei Wuxian, and at the same time, 13 years is more than enough for someone to forget a loved one's laughter, eyes, and touch.
Do you think that LWJ, even for his amazing memory, started to forget how WWX sounded when he laughed? When he teased, when he spoke, do you think that not only did he mourn WWX, he also mourned the fact that he was forgetting how he was?

And as an immortal, the years blend, scents and faces mix and match and you forget, and as decades pass and Gojo's favorite cologne is finally discontinued and is now a rare collector's item floating in between private collections, you also lose the last thing tying yourself to him, physically. The only thing you have left of him is an engagement ring that never quite turned into a wedding ring, a fading photo, and blurry memories of who he used to be.
I mean, ig we do get a happy ending because he reincarnates after a few years after reader forgets how he looked like in person, but if he took longer to come back, (BECAUSE IT'S NEVER GOJOVER) reader just might forget how he looked like except for the vague description of fair skin, white hair, and blue eyes. And longer, when the world finally forgets Gojo Satoru and he is no more but a page in a history book? maybe she'll start thinking it was all a dream or a figment of her imagination, that maybe a man who seemed made of stars and burned so brightly only existed in her mind because at this point, all she has of him is the love she's slowly forgetting, a ring, and his name briefly mentioned in history books.
