I'm going back to read the original AFTG trilogy and I really love how Nora handles intergenerational trauma. It's deeply compassionate and steps outside of the usual framing.
From my experience, a lot of people think about IGT as coming from an inherently negative place (i.e., alcoholic father drinks to manage his own pain, hurts his kids because he's more emotionally volatile, and kids learn to use alcohol as a way to cope with their pain). Which is absolutely a way that looks, but it's not the only way!
I've seen a lot of people comparing the Foxes and USC, and talking about how different Jean's recovery is from Kevin's and I think this theme is a huge part of it.
Like, the Trojans are all dealing with their own shit, but they have access to a support system where there's a reference point for healthier ways of coping. And that's the case because a lot of the team (including and especially the adults) have been able to learn those skills themselves.
(Jeremy is interesting here because I wouldn't necessarily count him amongst this number but that's a whole other thought).
Anyway, I think that Wymack really beautifully illustrates how IGT can be passed down through love rather than pain. It's very clear that he has not fully dealt with a lot of his own shit, and that he leans really heavily on alcohol as a primary coping strategy.
Along comes Kevin, and what does Wymack do? He sees a young man who is so fucking traumatized and barely holding on, and says maybe the thing that helps me can help him too. And he's not wrong! Alcohol is far from a healthy/sustainable way to cope, but it still helps people cope.
It's a part of the cycle of grief that happens with IGT -- because yeah there are probably a lot of different ways Kevin could have been helped through the aftermath of his injury. But Wymack was not equipped to help in any other way, and him passing along alcohol abuse came from a place of love. It's both deeply sweet and deeply sad, and it's also just the way things are.
wade could call logan by any gross thing in a bar or joke about alcohol.
