I genuinely love Funa's work, but I think one of its biggest weaknesses is how the lore is handled.
The worldbuilding is fascinating. You have characters that are memorable. The connections between stories make the universe feel huge and alive.
The problem is that so much important information exists outside the actual stories.
There are characters who are central to the setting, like Satanick, whose role, history, motivations, and relationships are barely understandable if you only read the main works (mind you, you only get to properly know who he is in the watgbs reboot and only in the bonus room). To fully understand them, you're often expected to dig through the wiki, old art, bonus comics, Q&As, streams, Twitter posts, and obscure side material.
I don't think the lore is bad. In fact, I think it's one of Funamusea's greatest strengths. But the way it's distributed is incredibly messy. Sometimes it feels less like following a narrative and more like assembling a puzzle from pieces scattered across the internet over the course of a decade.
MERRY CLITORIS CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW DICK YEAR GUYS !1!!!;!;1!!
my human au (again). Siralos here is a college teacher. also satanick's fwb lover. and, of course, short-sexy-king~~~
my roman empire is the tragedy of satanick and victor flankenstein. quite possibly the only person satanick could ever healthily love, ripped from him in the arms of death. and god, isn't it unfair. the immortal lover and their mortal love is a dynamic i'll literally never get over. the feeling of the impending doom of the one person you care for more than anything, knowing you will have to survive the rest of eternity in their absence. if it's disturbing to think about, i can only imagine how disturbing it is to truly experience. victor never would have wanted to be immortal, satanick knew that better than anybody. so, he just had to watch. watch knowing that one day he would be ripped from his arms, and he would be left with nothing once more. left to insanity. it's said that something in satanick was different once victor was gone, and i completely believe it. you can see a noticeable difference in his character. i truly believe that losing victor permanently broke what little of his mind he'd had preserved up to that point. as much as satanick isn't a character to be sympathized with, i can empathize with the experience. jesus christ, aren't they just tragic?
