Old State - Perspectives [7.16]

Old State is a pop punk/emo band from St. Louis, Missouri. The band has two releases in their discography, their most recent effort being “Perspectives”, which came out in July. Formed in 2014, this band has came a long way in terms of crafting a sound that I find intriguing. Old State is a combination of keys and guitar in emo music that I have been longing to find for quite some time. Every track on this record flows in the way that it should, creating an atmosphere that you can lose yourself in. I can’t help but be reminded of early Taking Back Sunday in more tender moments of songs like Porch Swing, and at the same time, there is a sort of angst in the vocals and instrumentation to coexist with the rest that reminds me of “Young States” era Citizen, and “I Wish I Could Stay Here” era Basement.

“The reception was calming, and everyone talking, it only made us miss you more.” Sometimes lyrics are so powerful that there are no words to be said about them. This is one of those moments.

I heard this band for the first time today and I will be no doubt be listening to them regularly now. This is a band that seems like it would have a killer live show, and I would love to experience it soon.

Can you name everyone in the band and what their role are? 

Right now our current line up is Ty Schejbal on Drums, Myself (Dave Fernandez) on bass, and Thomas "Skippy" Ryan on guitar. We've been having fill in vocalists and guitar players for the few shows we've had and will be deciding on permanent members in the not so distant future.

Saint Louis is a big city, what is the scene like there?

The scene in St. Louis is interesting. There's a lot of metalcore bands here. Also, a lot of the really good bands don't get a lot of good shows because promoters don't make as money off of them as they do other bands who just happen to have lot's of friends, so a lot of really good bands go unnoticed. Also, locals rarely get thrown on touring packages, keeping local bands unknown to people who only go to bigger shows. We've resorted to passing out our cds at bigger shows when we can. 

Anything big coming for 2015? 

 2015 is really exciting for us. We're going to be hitting the studio soon to record a new EP and hopefully tour a week or two for it. We've been asked to play all over the country and it sucks when you can't get everywhere to make everyone happy. We would like to meet as many people who love our music as possible and make new friends, and being realistic about touring is really hard. 

When did you all get together and decide to make music?

Old State was formed in July of 2014. It's something that I needed to do. I had to tell people about who I am. This was my out from the real world. This new EP is definitely more personal and intimate than our last and I really hope people can connect with it. 

Are there any bands that you draw a lot of your inspiration? 

Our influences are all across the board. The big ones going forward for the next release are Turnover, Have Mercy, Balance and Composure and Basement. 

What is your favorite thing to see at shows?

The most fun thing to see at shows is people singing along to songs we wrote. I'm not used to it yet, and I'm hoping I never have to. When you thing about it it's like "those are my words people are yelling. I wrote that, and people cared enough to listen to it." Still waiting on our first stage dive with this band though. Someone definitely needs to get on that! 

Anything to say to the fans?

The biggest thing I want to say to people who care about this band is thank you for sticking with us during this slow, grinding process. It's been a really tough few months for us. This is something I want to make my life and it's not possible without people who listen and care about what we do. I'd happily sleep in my car and eat Ramen every day if it means I'm playing music all the time. I've put everything I have into this band and when people share us around it just means so much every time I see it. We're never going to stop working hard to get the music we care so much about to as many ears as possible, even if it means giving up our free time to promote and spread the word of our music. We really believe in this and we hope everyone who listens to it does as well.
