I think a lot about the concept of "minors do not interact" and how it's deeply unsustainable
because when I was on Ye Olden Internet ™ I got into a lot of shit, and sure there were mechanisms at home and at school that prevented some access but then there were friend houses where the parents were like "yeah go play computer you pair of 13 year olds, here are snacks"
and looking back, what would have helped -me- would have been more guideposts to show me where the danger started:
- this triggers a phobia in a lot of people
- this is sexual content targeted to people over 18, written by people over 18
- this is a real human dying
the ethical responsibility of those of us who grew up with the evolving internet and post content available for a broad audience is to
a) set external, personal boundaries that limit communication on adult content
b) provide context and preface so younger folx don't get blindsided by horror like we were
there is "please don't interact directly with me, the content I make is adult and you are a child, this makes me very uncomfortable"
and "don't look at it, it's not for you"
if it's out there, nosy and curious bastards like thirteen-year-old me are going to find it, so the most responsible thing we can do as adult survivors of Ye Olden Internet ™ is say "here's what is about to come on board, you now have a chance to throw it out of the airlock"
Currently, I am taking a Education Technology course and a reflection question concerned ISTE standards for Digital Citizenship. Easily our school is at the awareness stage. Although I have taught lessons lessons about online social networking and internet technology use and ethics, our school does not uniformly integrate ethics into the curriculum. As usual, more training is needed for teachers
Lenny Kravitz Wardrobe Malfunction
Self: DO NOT look at the footage of Lenny Kravitz's dick. You are better than that.
Self: ... but ... Lenny Kravitz.
Self: (stinkeye over glasses) Doooooooon't.
Self: (kicks dirt underfoot) Okay. Fine.
