Rob Benedict - Stageit (21.11.20)
I watched Rob's online panel at Stageit last night and I really enjoyed it, besides all the heartbreak I feel about the ending of supernatural.
So let's get into some stuff he said!
He started with the spn final. What I really appreciated. He hoped we all enjoyed it. "I know it was controversial. But we worked really hard on it and you know endings are hard!"
After complimenting Jensen, Jared, and Misha for their incredible acting in the last episodes, he started with the fan's questions.
Question: "What happened to Chuck when Jack took his powers? If he died where did he end up? In the empty or anywhere else?"
Rob: "I don't think Chuck is dead. I think he just doesn't have god in him anymore. And I think he is just isolated. I think it's kind of his worst nightmare, cuz he is not god anymore, he is not in control, and he is alone. So I think that is punishment enough for him."
Then Rob was hypothesizing a little. He told us if they would ever come together again for like, a movie or something, Chuck could still come back as a "regular dude".
Rob thinks that Chuck is now an empty vessel.
Then he wanted to add something about the final. It felt like he was really struggling to know how many people are unhappy. Maybe I just being crazy, but it was like he was trying to explain it to us, so we can see it through his eyes. Kinda sweet.
Rob: "Again, people have extreme views about it and you are completely allowed to have your own view about what happened. I just wanna remind you that in the finale it was the first time that chuck was not writing the story. So you can reason that chuck this whole time has been bringing the boys back. You know, finding a way to keep them going so he can keep writing the story. And what happened in the last two seasons is that he got very selfish and made it all about him. And that was his mistake. So it was the first time where they just on a random hunt like they always do and Dean has that unfortunate thing happen where he dies, that unfortunate thing happen like death, but you know there is no evil writer in charge 'no no no we are gonna safe him from that and keep him going cuz I wanna keep manipulating him.' So to me, that was sort of an essence that was going on there. In a way Chuck kept them going because he wanted the story to keep going until he didn't anymore."
Question: "Did you find Chuck's ending fitting considering he disliked humanity?"
Rob: "Yeah, I mean, I thought it was fitting because he just got too wrapped up and he was trying to manipulate everything until the very end. And he wanted the ending to be this grant thing. He so enjoyed Sam and Dean, he enjoyed manipulation them and he thought for a second that it would be this great ending to be killed by them. And they didn't."
Then Rob told us that if there were a movie in the future he would love to play Chuck again, see what happened to him. He would like to play him more like the apocalypse Chuck, the hoarding toilette paper Chuck.
Question: "How did you prepare yourself to play this huge character?"
Rob: " Chuck went through so many changes, from being a prophet thinking he was just this lowly writer writing these trashy books and then finding out he was a prophet and then finding out he was god... "
Rob told us it was work to get all these adjustments from this likable character to the almighty, but it was fun. Even when ppl didn't like him (not sure if he was telling us that ppl were hating Rob for this character on a show, I hope not... or just the character Chuck), the evil Chuck from last season, he liked playing him.
Then he told us a great story. "At the end of last season when the evil Chuck started to come out, end of season 14 and I had that scene where I broke the guitar and I was sharp with Jensen I can remember like (saying) 'Enough!' or 'Stop!' or something like that and it was coming out kinda like weird like 'E-enough' (sounding anxious) and... I was still that other Chuck. And so I said to Jensen I feel like I'm not getting it yet, he was like (disguising his voice) 'Well, you say it like I'd say it!' and I was like 'ok'. So I went full Dean on that line!"
"So, evil Chuck was channeled a little bit by angry Dean."
I'm only 8 minutes into the panel and this is like... too much to write down. I will stop here, if you like more, let me know!
