Random thoughts on Tolkien free species - men (and hobbits), dwarves, elves - lifespans, especially in relation to each other, and multi-race persons
This is what I know so far-
Men- grown by 16-20, lifespan 70-80 years on average (Remnants of Numenor are outliers)
Hobbits - grown by 33, lifespan 90-100
Dwarves - grown by 40? Or 70s? Life span 250?
Elves - grown by 50? Treated as adults around 100? Lifespan indefinite unless slain (the original outliers)
—> what’s fanon there or not, need to find out
—> Multi-species species persons seem to count under the fate of whatever is “lesser” in the cosmic pecking order, which seems pretty clearly Ainur->Elves->Men
—> Luthien’s line is the only one offered a choice in fate; it’s not that other families don’t have the potential to exist in that world, it’s just that they aren’t considered under the terms of the decree, afaik (they also have the bit of Maia in there to mess up any even halves, that’s fun)
—> others in the legendarium?
—> we know elves and maia can mix (in one direction, with Melian bearing, but could an elf lady handle a half Maia pregnancy?) and elves and men; what of others?
Is it always “lesser” men with more powerful women?
hobbits: hobbits and dwarves
Dwarves: dwarves and hobbits (?)
Men: men, dwarves(?) and elves
Elves: elves, men and one instance of maia (if you like pina coladas and staring contests in nan elmoth) (Melian is a canon outlier, and Ainur aren’t the focus of the post anyway, but yeah, go forth and OC, I’ve got mine too)
In other words, small folk with small, big with big, men everywhere except the extremes of either end (hobbits and Maia) because it just wouldn’t work - also, even in mixed pairs, is it better if the female is from the bigger species probably? For giving birth to giant babies reasons - probably a bad idea
I’m not saying peoples WOULD; and likely height is a factor, with both attraction and logistics - there’s a lot of variety in humans, shorter than 5ft6 is what I can see happening, regardless of gender
I’ve seen the cute fanon(?) word “dwobbit” - and we all know Peredhel; but
What the fresh f*ck are we supposed to called someone who is part human, part dwarf?
what about dwarves?!! Arrrrgghhhhhhh
