Yes I used Meta AI to create an original character image for my original Witcher story based around an original Witcher character who is both blind and disabled, but y'all can't stop me and never will. Silence hung in the air between them. Of all things, it was silence. Emiel was kneeling awkwardly on the floor, thinking how lucky he was that he had decided to do this in private instead of some public spectacle, because Assire was just standing there with her arms crossed and an unimpressed look on her face. Was it the ring? Worse, was it him? Had they really been dating all this time with two entirely different ideas of where the relationship was going?

Emiel swallowed. After a whole minute had passed, he finally looked away from her; he couldn’t meet her eyes, anymore. What sort of relationship did they even have if they were dating with no hope of a future? Did Assire truly not want to marry him? That was his question, the one that landed him down on one knee, holding up this ring almost stupidly now. He felt like a statue. Like an idiot, more importantly. If not for Assire’s sudden shift, Emiel might have dropped it and given up all together. The fact that he hadn’t yet burst into apology was a miracle.

“We need to speak about this,” Assire said, and that certainly wasn’t a yes.

“What?” Emiel looked at her, then, jolting to meet her gaze. He finally dropped his arm. “Assire?”

Then, she shifted. They had just gotten back from an outing, one which had involved being dressed nicely. Emiel was wearing his best plaid, blue in color, with a pair of black jeans. Assire was wearing the most beautiful sun dress and draped around her was her cross-body purse. As she usually did, her short blonde hair was tucked back into a tight fitting hat. It was her purse that she reached for, pulling it open and fishing around inside. Emiel watched patiently, finally finding the strength to stand.

By the time he was standing, ring held back against his middle, Assire had found what it was she was looking for. As she presented it, Emiel’s eyes went wide. A little velvet box that was not unlike the one that he was holding sat in her hand. The difference was his was black and hers was white.

“I simply can’t agree to your proposal,” Assire said. “You see, I had my own planned.” Then, she opened the box to reveal the ring she had picked out for Emiel.

It was a solid band of white and blue, something so painfully appropriate for Emiel that he felt a lump in his throat. Really, it was beautiful, and he could almost feel the time Assire must have taken to pick it out. Not only that, but it almost matched the set of rings Emiel had gotten for Assire—an engagement ring and a wedding ring, because it was traditional. He’d picked out something made of white gold with inlaid rubies. White and red to match white and blue.

Still, Emiel looked at her in almost disbelief. Amused disbelief, but disbelief, nonetheless. It wasn’t the ring, and it certainly wasn’t him. Rather, Assire’s own purchasing of a ring proved that she had the same goals for their future that Emiel did. She wanted to get married. She also just wanted to be the one to suggest they get married. Emiel wouldn’t deny her that simply because it wasn’t traditional; nothing about them was traditional. He just beat her to the punch.

“Are you serious?” He gawked.

Assire nodded, closing the ring box. “Entirely serious. It was my intention to ask you first, so I can’t accept.”

Emiel could feel the laugher in his throat. “Really? You can’t turn down my proposal just because you wanted to ask me first!”

“And why not?” She wondered, a quirk of a grin on her pained red lips. This was funny.

“Because—because you clearly want to marry me,” Emiel argued back.

He tucked his ring box into his pocket and cleared the space between them. All it took was one step to be right up before her, and he grinned like a fool as he looked down at her. She smiled up at him, of course, because he was right. Once his hands were on her hips, Assire stood on the tips of her toes to get her arms around Emiel’s shoulders, where she clasped her fingers right at his neck.

“Emiel,” she said in that sweet voice of hers, the twinge of her Nilfgaardian accent. “Will you marry me?”

He grinned widely. Then, his grip was less about touching and more about holding. With his arms around her, it was almost too easy to hoist Assire right up into the air. Her shrieking laughter, the look on her face, were both beautiful. Emiel couldn’t stop his smile now, almost foolish in the size of his grin.

“Yes,” he said. “I’ll marry you. Nobody else on the continent I’d rather marry—what about you? Will you marry me?”

“Ask properly,” she teased, leaning down against him. Her legs kicked back into the air as she rested their foreheads together.

“Assire var Anahid,” Emiel breathed the sound of her name, “would you do me the honor of making me your husband?”

She laughed, then, creases at the edges of her eyes with how widely she smiled. Emiel finally put her down, but he bent the rest of the way so that they might kiss, and how Assire welcomed a kiss. She threaded her fingers through his hair, tugging at his curls and pulling him in closer. In response, Emiel’s hands slipped down her back, feeling over the ridges of her shoulder blades, her spine, and right back down to her hips. Though their kiss was chaste, it was long and deep enough that it meant something.

When they parted, Assire caressed her fingers back through Emiel’s hair, curling it behind his ears. She smiled at him, and he smiled right back.

“I will do you the honor,” she told him. “There is no one on the continent I would rather have.”
