This publicity photo from 1934 of Marie Wilson at the beginning of her career, showcases a beautiful gown by Orry-Kelly.   It was worn again by Dolores del Rio as Inez, Duchess of Rye, the following year in a promotional image for 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑾𝒊𝒅𝒐𝒘 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒆 𝑪𝒂𝒓𝒍𝒐.   See more photos of this gown at Bit.ly/PostEd271

And happy (belated) birthday to costume designer #MiloAnderson! Along with #OrryKelly and #LeahRhodes, Milo helped shape Warner Bros.' style voice. He was a talented designer from a young age and particularly gifted at #1940s #filmnoir, including TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT (1944) and MILDRED PIERCE (1945). Both continue to be highly influential on fashion. Orry-Kelly likely designed this polka dot dress for the 1942 film 𝑮𝒆𝒐𝒓𝒈𝒆 𝑾𝒂𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒕𝒐𝒏 𝑺𝒍𝒆𝒑𝒕 𝑯𝒆𝒓𝒆, where Ann Sheridan wore it as Connie Fuller.   The bow was removed when it was used many years later in 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑾𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒐𝒏𝒔 – first in the 1974 episode entitled 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒑𝒐𝒊𝒍𝒆𝒓𝒔, where Linda Purl wore it as Alicia Hanover, and again in the episode 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑳𝒐𝒔𝒔, where Deborah White wore it as Young Olivia.   A side-by-side comparison of the polka dots on the collar and detailing of the design of the skirt helps to confirm that they are the same gown. JEZEBEL, which premiered this month in 1938, is an example of the genius of costume design in black and white film. #OrryKelly needed to design a gown for #BetteDavis that looked red onscreen. But because true red often looks lighter in black and white, the actual dress was made in bronze satin.
