Whumptober 2019 Day 12: “Don’t Move”
@whumptober2019 day 12 :)
This one’s for Overwatch, which I’m new to, but damn that’s a lot of lore and characters, no? ...Let’s kill some :p
~300 words
Warnings: Character death, self sacrifice.
Explosions rang around Reinhardt, but this was life. This was overwatch. There were bullets pinging off his shield, and explosions landing right in front of him, but he still stood there, trusting in his shield to protect those behind him and—
“Brigitte!” He shouted, unable to do anything as he watched her charge in front of him. He was unable to say anything else as a rope came form a side alley and wrapped around her waist.
He signalled that he was going to break formation and got a nod from Orisa. He got ready and charged in that direction, managing to pin a few bots against the walls and crush them along the way. Once he was there, he swung and swung and swung his way to where she was on the ground, not moving, but not dead. No, not yet.
“Stay there!” he grunted, “Get up when you can.”
And while he’s there, staring down the bots, he makes peace with the fact that he cannot continue for forever. The number representing his shield health is telling him that he doesn’t have a lot of time left.
Brigette was almost up on her own. Her hand was on his back, and he could only look forward at the oncoming wave. “Don’t move,” she whispered, holding a hand to her head. “I’m almost ready…”
“We don’t have time.” He’s made peace with what he needs to do. Farther down, past the wave, he can see a drop off.
“What?”
“Get out. Go join the others.”
“Wait, don’t move! Don’t do this,” she begged. But it was too late. They were trapped and he only saw one way out.
With one last look back, Reinhardt felt his shield break, and he charged forward, grabbing as many of the robots as he could before he fell over the edge. And in the back of his mind, while he falls, he hears her still whispering don’t move.
