For some obscure reason I'm rewatching Grey's Anatomy for fun and I've noticed two things :
1) Emergency medicine physicians simply do not exist in this show, the ER is run exclusively by surgeons
2) Apparently it's a military medic thing to dislike the shiley cannula
Bonus : 3) Maybe itâs also just a military medic thing to have crush on the smartest one in the room who unfortunately lost her father when she was young, what drove her to pursue medicine
Which is perfectly understandable, just look at these goddesses
Mark Sloan x Female Trauma Surgeon (OC)
Post Season 5 of Grey's Anatomy
Mark Sloan wasnât a believer in fate. He was a believer in lucky timing, a killer smile, and the power of a great suit.
And today? Today was definitely lucky.
The woman at the coffee cart was alone, tapping a manicured finger on her phone while waiting on what looked like the most unnecessarily complicated order heâd ever heard. Cinnamon? Oat milk? A caramel drizzle?
He grinned.
She had long blonde hair tucked half-heartedly into a claw clip, a soft, oversized sweater hanging off one shoulder, and legs for days beneath fitted slacks. She looked like a lifestyle blogger wandered onto the Seattle Grace campus by accident.
Definitely not a surgeon.
Which meant she was fair game.
Mark stepped up beside her, turning on the charm. âYou know, if your coffee takes longer than an appendectomy to make, thatâs how you know itâs not really coffee.â
She didnât even look up. âOr maybe itâs just how you know itâll be good.â
His grin widened.
âIâm Mark.â
That got her attention. She lifted her head and pinned him with wide blue eyes that sparkled like mischief and caffeine. âOh,â she said sweetly. âOne of those.â
He raised an eyebrow. âThose?â
âYou know.â She waved her hand lazily. âThe âIâm Markâ types. Strong jaw, smug smile, charming in a you-know-you-are way. Probably a doctor. Plastic surgeon? Definitely not pediatrics.â
Mark actually laughed. âWow. That was⊠a disturbingly accurate personality autopsy.â
âI watch a lot of Dateline,â she replied breezily, accepting her drink with a smile. âThanks for the diagnosis, Dr. Mark. Enjoy your lukewarm, personality-free drip coffee.â
She walked off without a second glance, sipping like she won the war.
Mark stood there, stunned into something dangerously close to impressed.
When he walked into the attendings' lounge forty minutes later, Mark was still thinking about her. Her voice. Her sass. Her mouth. What that mouth would look like saying his nameâunder very different circumstances.
Then Owen Hunt came in behind him and said, âDr. Sloan, this is Dr. Cameron Blake, our new trauma attending.â
Mark turned.
There she was.
The coffee cart woman.
In scrubs. Hair pulled back properly. Badge clipped to her top. Looking tiny next to Hunt, but standing with the confidence of someone whoâd held a heart in her hands and told death to wait its turn.
Mark blinked. âYouâre Dr. Blake?â
She smiled slowly, like she knew exactly what was happening in his head.
âI am. And you must be Dr. Mark.â
Owen looked between them. âYou two know each other?â
CameronâDr. Blakeâsipped her coffee with that same smug satisfaction. âBriefly. He made fun of my order. I destroyed his ego. It was very bonding.â
Mark opened his mouth, but Hunt clapped a hand on his shoulder. âPlay nice. Sheâs got trauma experience from Mercy West, Hopkins, and two years with Doctors Without Borders.â
Then he left them alone, because Owen had the social skills of a brick.
Mark turned to her, arms crossed. âYou couldâve told me you were a surgeon.â
âYou couldâve not assumed I wasnât.â
âTouche.â
He leaned against the counter, studying her. She was shorter than heâd realized, but she carried herself like someone who didnât need height to be commanding. She had this deceptive sweetness to her faceâbig eyes, soft voice, a smile that made people underestimate her right before she metaphorically (or literally) elbowed them in the ribs.
It was a thing. And now it was his thing.
âSo, trauma?â he asked.
âYep. Bleeding, guts, adrenaline. All the good stuff.â
âI usually try to put people back together without the guts.â
âLet me guessâboobs and butts?â
âFaces too,â he said, mock-offended. âIâm an artist, not a perv.â
She laughed, and it was a real laugh. Not polite. Not condescending. Just surprised and warm.
âIâll keep that in mind, Dr. Sloan.â
Over the next week, Mark tried to get her out of his headâand failed spectacularly.
She was everywhere. In the pit, calling trauma codes with blood on her gloves and fire in her voice. In the attendingsâ lounge, stealing the last clean mug and grinning at him like it was a game. In the OR board, somehow already on everyoneâs radar for being good.
Bailey liked her. Hunt respected her. Callie said, âSheâs a chaos gremlin and I adore her.â
Meredith, of course, said, âSheâs like if Izzie had Cristinaâs backbone.â
And that was the thingâshe was soft and sharp, pretty and ruthless, warm and smart enough to see through every line Mark tried.
She didnât avoid him. But she didnât fall for his usual flirt-and-flatter routine either.
And that just made him want her more.
It finally came to a head on a Thursday.
They were in an elevator, post-trauma, both covered in blood. He had a tear in his scrub top. She had a smear across her cheek she hadnât noticed.
Mark looked over at her and said, âYouâve got somethingâŠâ
She turned her cheek toward him automatically.
Instead of wiping it with a sleeve, he used his thumb, brushing the streak gently. Too gently. It lingered a second longer than it needed to.
Cameron blinked.
ââŠThanks,â she said.
He didnât move back.
âYouâre dangerous, Dr. Blake.â
âIâve heard.â
âYou pretend to be all sunshine and cinnamon. But youâve got knives in your smile.â
âAnd yet you keep showing up.â
âMaybe I like the danger.â
The elevator doors opened. She didnât move.
Then she leaned closer, just an inch. Close enough that he could smell herâcoffee, shampoo, and adrenaline.
âIâm not interested in being another name in your phone, Mark.â
âWhat if I said I want to learn your coffee order instead?â
She stepped out of the elevator, walking backward.
âThen Iâd say I hope you like cinnamon oat milk with a caramel drizzle.â
She winked.
Mark stood there in the elevator, watching the doors close between them with the slow grin of a man whoâd just found his favorite challenge.

That morning the sun seeped through the blinds, waking up before the small alarm on the bedside table. Owen shifted, slowly waking up. He barely got any sleep as it was, but waking up with her in his arms made things just a little more barbel. He had worked late into the night the day before, working the busy ER and not even getting the chance to say goodbye to her before she left with Callie and Mark. He snuck in later that night, avoiding waking up their rescue German shepherd, and crawling into bed.
He held on to her, cuddling her as long as the morning would let him, dreading the moment their alarm would start screaming at them.
When the alarm did go off, y/n slept through it like usual. There wasn't even a twitch or any sound of her breath hitching. Like usual she couldn't be bothered by the alarm. It's a miracle she doesn't miss pages from the hospital.
After a few minutes of the alarm clock blaring, Owen groaned and slowly sat up, glancing over at her sleeping figure. He was used to her being able to sleep through the alarm clock, hell he often had a hard time trying to wake her up. He ran a hand through his ginger locks and lightly shook her, gently trying to wake her up.
âMmâ y/n groaned, reaching over towards the bedside table without leaving his arms and hitting the snooze button, shutting the little bastard up.
Owen lightly chuckled, wrapping his arms tighter around her. He moved one of his hands up and began tracing random shapes on her bare back, trying to coax her awake. As much as he wouldâve loved to lay in bed with her all day, he knew that they both had busy schedules with work. He leaned down and began planting soft kisses across her neck, trying to get a reaction out of her. He let his hand wander, letting his hand rub up and down her bare thigh.
Y/n smiled softly, slowly waking up. Then his lips traveled down her neck near the chain around her neck. It was hidden underneath her shirt, but it was his dog tags from when he was in the army. He didn't know she started wearing them. He lightly smiled, his heart swelling as he found she was wearing his dog tags. He didnât even think she knew he had them, but there they were against her skin, the small silver tags laying across her chest. He began tracing little kisses across her shoulder and collarbone, nuzzling his head into the crook where her shoulder and neck met.
Owen moved so he was lying on top of her, his arms still wrapped around her with their sheets bunched up across his waist. Owen pressed more kisses along his jawline, then to her cheek and up to her ear as he whispered softly. âYouâre wearing my tagsâ Owen said gently, his breath against her ear sending another shiver down her skin.
Y/n looked up at him as he pulled the tags from under her shirt. âY-yeah. Are you upset?â she asked softly, knowing the army was a sore subject.
He smiled softly, cupping her cheek in his hand. He lightly shook his head and leaned down so he was almost nose to nose with her. âNo, no Iâm not upset. Iâm actually pretty glad to see you wearing themâ Owen leaned down and softly nuzzled down against her neck again, nipping at the skin underneath his lips. It was a sight that he never knew he needed until now.
âAre you sure?â she asked softly. âI found them a couple of months ago in the dresser when I was putting clothes awayâ
Owen lifted his head, his blue gaze locking with hers. The expression on his face was soft, a look that he only seemed to have with her. He moved a few locks of hair from her face and shook his head again. âIâm sure,â Owen reassured her, his hand moving back to cup her cheek. âYou can wear them whenever you like, I donât really wear them anymore anywayâ
âWell, you can have them back whenever you wantâ
Owen lightly shook his head and chuckled, running his thumb across her cheek. He was fine letting her wear them, it actually gave him a sense of comfort knowing that she was wearing a small piece of his past around her neck. He leaned down and began nipping teasingly at her lip before leaning back to look at her. âNo, you can keep them. Iâm fine with you wearing themâ
âJust makin' sure... I know all of that is a sour subjectâ she said softly.
He softly sighed, resting his forehead against hers, his gaze never leaving hers. He knew what she was thinking, she knew that it was a touchy topic for him, and usually not one he liked to talk about. But being with herâŠit was different, it made it easier. He slowly moved a hand from her cheek downwards, trailing a finger across the chain that was looped around her neck, holding his dog tags against her skin. âIâm fine. You donât have to worryâ
Y/n cupped both sides of his jaw, gently rubbing her thumb over the scruff on his cheeks. âI love you,â she whispered and placed a quick soft kiss on his lips. âMy hero,â she whispered.
Owen closed his eyes as she rubbed her thumb over his cheek, leaning into her touch. He loved this side of her, more open, more vulnerable. It was one of his favorite things about her.
Her voice pulled him out of his thoughts and he opened his eyes, to look down at her, he hummed at the words, and the fact that he was her hero, that she looked to him like that. âI love you too, sweetheartâ
Y/n sighed softly, wrapping her arms around his neck. âI guess we have to go to work now, huh?â
He groaned softly, wrapping his arms around her waist and letting his body weight sink down against her, and he buried his face in the crook of her neck, leaving soft kisses against your skin. âMm, I donât want to goâ
âMe neither, but we gotta, Have a surgery scheduled todayâ
Owen sighed again, he knew she was right, but he didnât want to give up the warmth of her body against his, the feeling of her under him, he groaned a little louder when he finally lifted his head to look at her. âI donât like that youâre making senseâ
Y/n chuckled softly, running her fingers through his red hair. âcome on, soldierâ
He hummed, his eyes closing at the feeling of her fingers in his hair, he was practically melting in her hands. He knew you were right, he needed to act like a professional adult, but he was hating it. âIâm tired, give me five more minutesâ
âAlright, Five minutes, â y/n rolled her eyes playfully. âbut only because I'm not looking forward to spending hours in the OR with yangâ
Owen hummed, satisfied with her response. He nuzzled his head back down against her neck.

For some background for these two you must know this. Christina was indeed a good surgeon and extremely smart, but she wasn't exactly a kind person. During her intern year she would be cocky and cold, especially to the people in her intern class. People like George O'Malley and y/n Grey. They were more soft spoken then she was and they weren't surgery hungry like Christina and Meredith.
Y/n usually ignored her and didn't let Christina get under her skin. She especially wouldn't say anything when Christina became best friends with her cousin Meredith Grey. Christina didn't change and continued to be cold and mean towards y/n. Even into their resident years at the hospital. Then it only seemed to get worse when Christina became close friends with Owen.
Y/n never knew what she did to make Christina hate her so much, but she decided to be a better person and never escalate anything. She was her cousin's best friend and as much as y/n loved her cousin Meredith, she didn't have the heart to tell her about her problems with her best friend Christina.
Y/n was a pediatric resident, Christina thought it was a weak specialty for a doctor, she also thought she was smarter because she chose cardio. Unfortunately her and Christina both were assigned a young patient that needed heart surgery today. The new cardio attending would be in on the surgery too since Arizona couldn't supervise. Y/n hadn't spoken to her yet, she stood next to the attending though while they scrubbed in for the surgery. Her face was already covered by the mask and her hair was hidden under a scrub cap with birds.
The attending seemed nice though, by the look in her eyes so to speak. Christina on the other hand gave y/n the cold shoulder. It was so tense that there was so much silence. She tried to make it like a subtle threat as she spoke with y/n. âI'm the lead in here so you just follow my instructions. Okay?â And just like that she walked over to the operating table grabbing gloves and instruments. She started to prep the patient.
âWow,â the attending finally spoke up. âain't she just a little rain of sunshineâ she snickered underneath the surgical mask.
âYeahâ y/n rolled her eyes, taking her engagement ring off and putting it in her pocket then pulled Owen's dog tags over her head to put them away too for the surgery. The attending noticed. âyou served?â
Y/n looked up, surprised at the question. She realized now she could get that question now and wondered if someone might take it the wrong way. âum, no⊠They're my finances. He served in Iraqâ she blushed, feeling slightly embarrassed. âI guess I'm kinda weird. I steel dog tags instead of clothesâ
The attending let out a light hearted laugh. âI served in Iraq too, what's his name?â
âOwen Huntâ
She let out a soft chuckle, nodding. âyou must be y/n then, nice to finally put a face to the nameâ
âthen I'm guessing your Teddy?â
âOwen said you'd got the cardio job here, welcome to Seattle Grace⊠It's a shit showâ I joked.
~~~~~~~~(.......)~~~~~~~~
âHey,â y/n said, walking out of the ER where Owen was waiting for an ambulance with a couple of traumas. She smiled as Owen leaned down, pecking her on the lips. âOh, yeah. Teddy started today, how come you didn't tell me?â she unbothered.
Owen shrugged as smirked tugged at his lips. âWell you didn't exactly give me a chance to break the news this morningâ
âI suppose you're rightâ y/n rolled her eyes playfully. âshe seems nice, she was the attending assigned to my surgeryâ
âYeah, she's great,â Owen said, shrugging.
Great was almost becoming overkill. She just seemed to be perfect, y/n respected her as a surgeon, but y/n found herself unable to call her a true friend. She wasn't a ride or die like Callie or Mark. After Teddy moved to Seattle she started hanging out more at Owen and y/n's apartment. It didn't bother her, she was glad Owen had his best friend back. She also kinda turned a blind eye to the way Teddy would laugh at Owen's bad jokes or get a little too touchy. Who was y/n to judge? Her best friend was male, y/n would stand close to Mark, share food, and if they were tired enough after a surgery together crash on the same on-call room bed.
Y/n trusted Owen and he trusted her. They were getting married in a few months and neither one could bring themselves to get jealous of each other's best friends. In the end Teddy was a good person and y/n knew that, the two slowly started to get used to each other and became good friends. Y/n thought things were going good, that was until Christina started working with Teddy more. That didn't bother y/n, her focus was Peds, what bothered her was Teddy started treating her differently. Being dismissive and cold. Only coming by y/n and Owen's apartment when y/n wasn't home.
~~~~~~~~(.......)~~~~~~~~
Then one day Christina decided to drop the bomb. A couple residents were hanging around a nurses station, looking into a patient's window. She had driven this other girl's car off the road because she found out this girl was having an affair with her husband. Jackson and Meredith were rambling on about it then Christina jumped in, speaking before thinking. âI mean⊠Altman admitted she liked Huntâ
Y/n shot Christina a look. âWait, what?â
Christina let out a surprised, condescending laugh. âOh, shit. You didn't know?â
âWhen the hell was this?â
âIt was a long time ago,â Jackson said, trying to make the situation less serious.
She shrugged, feeling some sort of joy at this. âYouâre right. Iâm not.â Jackson and Meredith shifted uncomfortably next to them.
âWhateverâ she shook her head, looking back down at her patent chart. Y/n wasn't bothered. Owen and her were getting married next year and she knew he wasn't cheating.
Christina had to get the last say, âI doubt Huntâs gonna stick with you that long.â Jackson elbowed her arm sharply, but it was too late. Everyone around them heard.
The entire room went quiet as y/n looked up. Jackson tried to back paddle. âSheâs just kidding.â
âYeah, whatever Jacksonâ y/n snapped her patient chart closed and stood up. âdefend herâ she sighed, standing up and walking away.
ây/n-â Jackson began, sighing in frustration as she walked away from him and the group.
Meredith shot Christina a look. âThat was harsh, even for you.â
~~~~~~~~(.......)~~~~~~~~
A few hours passed and y/n was off the clock. She was hiding up in one of the OR galleries, catching up on some patient charts. Her pager would beep, but she'd just ignore it when she saw the names that would pop up. After the last beep, she didn't even look at it and kept working. She heard footsteps next, she looked up and saw Owen. âHey. What are you doing up here?â He sat in the empty seat next to her.
âI'm Just working on some paperwork,â she shrugged. âit's quiet up here, no more surgeries are scheduled over hereâ
Owen looked at her, noticing something was off with her. âYou okay?â
âWhy didn't you tell me Teddy admited that she was in love with you?â
Owen was surprised at her question. He didn't expect it. âHow, how do you? Who told you?â
âYang of all people,â she rolled her eyes then spoke up again in a calm tone. âSo, why didn't you tell me?â
Owen sighed. He didn't tell y/n because he already suspected how she was gonna react and was expecting her to ask that question to him. âBecause, I wasn't gonna tell you because it doesn't matter to me. What Teddy feels shouldn't concern you. I'm with you. Not herâ
âYeah, but we need to have these conversations,â y/n said softly. âbut it's no secret. you guys this long history and she understands you better than I ever couldâ
Owen grabbed her shoulder and turned her softly so she would be facing him. âDon't say that about yourself. You and me have a history too. Just because Teddy and I went to war together doesn't mean that she knows me better than you. You and I have a different connection. You get me, y/n. You understand meâ He said firmly and tucked her hair behind her ear. âand besides, that's a lieâ
âwhat?â
âthat Teddy understands me,â Owen said. âshe never really tried too, but you. You got those kinda eyes that can look right through the bullshit To the good in someone. You always saw the good in meâ
Y/n smiled softly, leaning forward and kissing him softly. âThis means everything to me, you mean everything. I don't just let random girls walk around with my dog tagsâ
Y/n chuckled softly, resting her forehead against his. âI love youâ
Whatâs greys obsession with putting characters who donât want kids with characters who want/have kids, crowen, samaddison and with the majority of their queer/sapphic ships, kaimelia(which the only of the ships were a character didnât change their mind along crowen) calzona, carizona, marina.
