“I'll cover for you. Now, go fix him!”
“At least he's safe from the Clave.”
“For the time being.”
“Let’s do this.”
“Focus.”
“It worked.”
That was a dirty move owl
i agree with everything you've said about owl Jace. And while it would have been cute to have a scene where Alec reassures Magnus, it's not going to all of a sudden make the Jalec shippers realize they're delusional and make them decide they're not going to be racist anymore. Also, I can still remember that Bailey scene you're talking about. I used to love that show.
Pretty much. I think it’s two-fold. One, it’s not about Alec’s whatever used to be “feelings” for Jace. It’s about the parabatai bond. Jace isn’t a romantic rival nor could he ever be. Two, it’s not something Alec has to reassure Magnus about because he’s not phased by it. There’s nothing to be threatened by. If the J/lecs want to live in a world where Alec is only with Magnus because he can’t have Jace, and where he’s intimate with Magnus, where he’s constantly telling Magnus he loves him and doesn’t want to be anywhere without him, where he’s thinking about being with Magnus when he’s old, then that my friend is on them. And you know what? They can have that Alec because that Alec is a gaslighting garbage person.
Look, it’s similar to WestAllen. I saw someone say in season seven (mind you The Flash is just rounding out its fourth season so lol, wishful thinking or psychic abilities I guess) that Iris and Barry could divorce and then Barry will get with Caitlin (or whomever. I assume it doesn’t matter as long as he’s away from Iris tbh in their minds.)
Shippers like that can’t be reasoned with so why even try?
Matt’s even said that even if Jace were gay, that him and Alec wouldn’t have worked in the long run in his opinion because that’s not the kind of love they have.
It’s kind of sad because on one hand, you have people who don’t ship them romantically and are just here for the parabatai bond but who somehow still need to put Alec’s relationship with Magnus down to prop up the parabatai bond and then you have the shippers who are obviously never going to get on board with Malec.
Here’s the funny thing. I, as a Magnus x Alec shipper, don’t want Alec’s love for Magnus to be proved by Alec sacrificing other family members? I don’t want Alec or Magnus telling each other that they’re nothing without the other person. Lines like that sound romantic, but Holy Batman, are they not.
The older I get, the more I realize how notions that used to sound so romantic are actually terrible. Knowing the type of characters Alec and Magnus are, they’d both sacrifice themselves over picking between two people they loved. It’s not their nature and I love that about them.
We do this thing in society where we romanticize the ONE true love of a person’s life and try and place people in order of importance and it’s wrong. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying for some people there won’t be a one true love. Some people get married and are together for years and when one spouse passes away, they don’t ever remarry. Or some might remarry.
Or no one even has to die. Sometimes relationships just run their course and the people can still love each other deeply.
The thing is, doing this is a very human thing because we don’t want to feel like we’re unimportant or that someone was settling for us or that we’re just one in the long line of many. That’s why Alec got so upset. Totally understandable, but it’s also unfair because love isn’t quantifiable. It’s not meant to be.
The love Alec and Magnus have for each other? My lord, it’s SO fucking deep and amazing and making it into a contest of who loves who more or who else in their lives takes up more space? Fuck that noise. It cheapens them and taints them. Really, fuck that noise.
So, at the end of the day, no. I’m going to write 1, 2 & 3 under Alec and place characters in these spots because it’s unnecessary and it’s not accurate any way.
Part of it is because the way they play fast and loose with the p bond. I think if it were say Izzy and Alec and Alec saying he’s nothing without Izzy, people would be more receptive because okay, she’s his sister, etc. But time and time again, it’s proven that Alec thinks of Jace as a brother.
Whatever you think he felt for him prior to Magnus, he doesn’t feel that anymore. Not in a romantic sense. Now, those shippers can either live with it or just pretend that Alec is settling for Magnus (gross) or some other scenario that I don’t care to come up.
Sorry this became a much longer response!
And, yes, that PO5 Bailey episode was amazing and so raw with emotion.
ETA:
Another thing is, again, this just highlights the codependency which is not a positive of the p-bond. So???? If you wanna celebrate Alec still not thinking himself worthy independent of Jace then, woot! Party on, I guess? It’s a very tragic line honestly.
