finally got around to watching the series finale of The Listener and I am so upset. I've loved this show forever and I'm just so sad to see all that wasted potential. You guys had a cool story going on, telepath whose mom had to abandon him to keep him safe from some shifty organization who was kidnapping people with powers or something. 

Then you turned it into a police crime drama and we have no closure whatsoever. Where's Toby's brother? Who exactly was his mom running from? What was this organization all about? What about all the other people with powers that we ran into? 

I still love the characters and everything, but even the relationships got messed up. Toby and Oz used to be best bros and then we were lucky if Oz was in an episode for five minutes. Half the time the show was so focused on the cases and stuff that we barely even got to see Toby and all the emotional stuff we needed. 

The finale fucked that up by just having his mom show up out of nowhere. The reaction Toby gave just felt really weird. Wouldn't you be a little more emotional if the mother you hadn't seen in twenty years suddenly showed up at your door?

idk i mean i still love Toby and a lot of the other characters to death but they fucked up so badly after season 1.

I already miss you guys! It may have meant a happy reunion for Toby but for me it's gonna be a painful goodbye!

TOBY: Oz, the reason that I know things that I shouldn't, and the reason I do things that don't make sense, is because I can read minds. I know it sounds crazy --

OZ: It sounds like you're messing with me, man. Sounds like you don't wanna tell me the truth. Like I don't feel nuts enough, between Ryder and the report and, you know what --

The Listener Fic (Incomplete): Desperate Hours

((I watched episode 2.10 last night and I just wanted someone to get shot really badly ok. Sorry Toby. But yes, this isn't done yet. I just lost my motivation halfway through because I got distracted by some things. I'll finish it eventually.))

'Looks like we've found our weakest link.'

Toby's gaze snaps to James' wife, eyes scanning her every movement. She's flustered, furious, and loosely waving the gun around like a flag during Canada day. He can grab it. He can fix this. He can save Oz and himself.

He feels like he's going to throw up.

The two couples are still arguing over the money and who betrayed who. He glances to Oz again and sees the serious expression on his friend's face. If he doesn't move, then Oz surely will.

'This is our chance, she's barely aware of the gun!'

And that's when Toby moves. There's no way he's letting Oz go for it. No way he's putting his best friend in any more danger than he's already been in today.

Toby lunges at the woman.

Someone shouts (Claire!), he thinks it's James, then a shriek that definitely comes from Claire. She's whips around so fast, startled by Toby's sudden movement, and the hand holding the gun flies up to meet Toby's abdomen just as he's about to smack the weapon from her.

Toby inhales sharply, then there's a bang, another scream, and suddenly he can't move.

“Toby!” That's Oz, sounding terrified. Why is he freaking out? What's-

A sudden fire lances up from his stomach and through his chest and the next thing he knows he can't breathe.

“What..?” The words come out strained, confused. There's a ringing in his ears and he barely hears Claire wail and say the words “Oh my God.”

“Toby!”

When did Oz get in front of him? Why is he shouting? Toby blinks sluggishly and lifts a shaking hand to his stomach where all the pain seems to be coming from. His hand comes away red.

Oh. Is his first thought. His second is: She actually shot me?

Then world in front of him swoons and a second later he's on his knees with Oz managing to somewhat catch him and stop him from toppling over completely. He leans against his best friend, listening as he murmurs 'you're going to be ok' over and over again while feeling like dead weight in Oz's arms.
