She had barely slept. Maybe 2 hours at most. It was still an ungodly hour, but she had more or less expected it to be. When your mind is moving at miles a minute even though your body can barely move an inch, no matter how tired you were it’s impossible if not everything is on the same page. Call it her curiosity, or her nosiness, that kept her up, but she questions burning in the back of her mind that she wanted answers to. They were all questions she really had no right to know the answer to, but wanted to toy with the idea that maybe she could get what she wanted.
She had tact, at least. She knew better than to ask when the soil was still fresh, even though it was all over the papers. Avoiding the topic was easy enough, their conversations had never ventured that far into the personal. Days, weeks and months passed, and by now, to most, it was just another event that occurred. Unimportant, insignificant to your average citizen and by all means it should be to her as well but Minji was always curious, and the most burning question she had always sat at the tip of her tongue waiting for the right moment to spill out.
Pages rustled as she fumbled around her a hoodie to slip on, newspaper clippings falling out of some pages as one of a handful of volumes slipped from the mattress. She didn’t want to be a distraction at home, so here she was at the motel again. Her brother had an early morning ahead of him, and Minji wanted a late night for herself, whisking away some of the older volumes at home with her to read, and some newer ones to write in. She hastily stuffed the newspaper clippings back in their respective book, stuffing one in the front pocket of her hoodie in the off chance it became relevant before she slipped on her shoes, not bothering to even put them on properly as she headed out the door.
That familiar face at the front desk always brought something of a smile to Minji’s lips. It was the tiniest little curve, always followed with a wave as she settled herself on the corner of the desk, legs crossed, half put-on shoes barely hanging on by the tips of her toes.
“Slow night?”
