synpath worldbuilding stuff that got done in the car today:
-the original computer that runs the ES Intrepid was removed and replaced with a new cheap one bought on """the black market""" or w/e bc the original one had all of the government protocols/locks on where they could and couldn't travel. the new one has been affectionately named "glitch" and talks in a garbled jumble of accents, often randomly opens and closes doors/turns lights off and on, and sometimes straight up doesn't work, but it's all they've got.
-[insert name of beck's empire here] stole the technology used to edit the code for the human brain from [insert name of opposing govt here], which is what started the war. beck's side wants to use this code to fix errors in the human brain (basically cure mental illnesses regardless of whether or not people want them to be cured) and the other side was using the technology to build very simple minds to insert in people who would act as the perfect soldiers.
-beck went from taking random odd jobs as a synpath and working planetside to working on govt ships a year ago bc of the newfound ability of regular people to edit brain code. he knew that once synpaths started becoming obsolete, the government would be his best chance for a steady job + he wanted to save up a lot of money for once his abilities stopped being valuable.
-beck is no longer attempting to travel back to his home planet when the story starts--he's trying to travel back to the capitol planet to get to the government memory banks. every govt employee gets their brain backed up in storage at the start of the job as a kind of benefit + for the govt's own purposes, so he's trying to get his brain reverted to its state as of one year ago in order to get mouse, gallina, and reave out.
-stuff...about reave that i'm not posting here bc i don't want to spoil my own story that people might potentially read
