Wake Me Up || Paige & Charles
Nearly a month ago, the girl had watched the boy she loved fall from a steep cliff. She’d tried to climb down to be at his side in his final moments. She was hysteric as she approached his still body but just as she got close, she’d been taken by a man much older and stronger than herself. Then, taken to a helicopter far away from the island and far away from Malcolm. She clawed at the people who held her in place, cried and kicked and screamed.
The world was a blur around her and all she could see was the flash of the boy she loved saying he loved her once more before plunging to his death. Eventually, the men and women in the helicopter had little choice but to put Paige under sedation because she was just too frantic to calm. Usually, Radley would put their victors under medically induced comas for a week or so to recover from the island.
But Paige was being kept under much longer, a month now to be exact. Charles visited the pale brunette every single day. Most of the new patients had arrived, but were unaware yet of what was to come, so things were calm for him and Sophia. For now. He was worried for the girl, ever-wondering why they hadn’t awoken her yet.
He sat by her bed, talking to her about Malcolm as he usually did. He knew she couldn’t hear him, but he was sure if she could, Malcolm was exactly the person she’d want to hear about. And one day, this day... Paige’s eyes slowly opened. She let out a soft groan, and it took her a moment to regain consciousness and to realize she was within the walls of Radley’s infirmary.
She blinked a few times, then carefully turned her neck to look at the man seated beside her bed. “Ch-Charles..?” her voice was nearly a croak. She looked down over her arms, covered with IVs. Then memories from her time on the island resurfaced in painful detail. Tears came to her eyes as she whipped her head back to look at Charles again, “Where is he? Please... t-t-tell me he’s ok-kay...”
Charles was so relieved when Paige woke up, he couldn’t even hide the look on his face. He rushed from his seat up to his feet, “Hey, there.” He smiled at her until the moment she mentioned Malcolm. Now, he was to be the bearer of the worst news for this poor sweet girl. He frowned, gulping, “Malcolm didn’t... he didn’t make it, Paige...”
“No...” Paige shook her head and quickly closed her eyes as if she could make it all just disappear without being able to see or hear any of it. But she remembered. The boy had jumped from so high. Why did he have to jump...? Tears came through, even with her eyes tightly shut, rolling down her cheeks.
Charles laid a hand on Paige’s shoulder. He knew he would have to wait for her to compose herself before he spoke. He would have to be patient with her, the way he’d promised Malcolm he would be. His heart broke for the girl as she crumbled into grieving sobs. Finally, Paige opened her eyes again to meet his.
“He... He loved you so much, Paige,” Charles said solemnly, because it was the truth and it was the most comforting thing he could think to say. Then he sighed, and he shook his head, squeezing her shoulder only slightly with his hand, “You’re not alone here. You’ve got me. And Sophia. A fucked up family, but a family all the same.”
Through her tears, Paige could barely see when he spoke. No, this couldn’t be. Her mind raced. There was no way he was gone, just like that. No funeral even? No mourning. How was she supposed to move on with her life? She would kill them all. Every single person who’d ever contributed to Malcolm’s death would burn in the fire’s of hell and Paige would make sure her hands were the hands to land each of them there.
She appreciated Charles at that moment, but was too angry to show it. And instead, the brunette screamed out, pain echoing in her voice, “Get me the fuck out of here!” He looked shocked at her outburst, but then nodded his head, turning from her to get a nurse to unhook all the IVs from Paige’s arm.
After informing the woman that Paige was ready to leave, Charles stopped just before Paige’s bed, “You ever need anything... you got it.” He wasn’t angry at the girl. How could he be? He understood what it was like to lose everything you ever loved. The difference was, he got Sophia back -- Paige would never get Malcolm back.
