  A 70 year old stubborn man unable to quite smoking even after the news from his doctor, his wife that all state he should stop.He has the mind set that he has been through worse and comming from a man that has smoked 20 Winston cigarettes a day since he was twelve well his mentallity is why stop now?

A Life Lived Within The Mines Working Long Hours, Was A Smoker At the Age Of Tweleve and Has Yet To Kick The Habbit

This was my least favorite film. After watching this film I was worried that all the films were going to be as slow and dull. I think with the content and slow pace this film should have not been in black and white because it only dulled it more. Personally it had funny parts within the dry humor. I understand the film was of a 70 year old retired miner as well as mines were beginning to close down. But all the focus I found was on a smoker and the known fact that he had to stop smoking or else it would worsen.

His wife tried giving him valid reasons of why he should quit in stating that it was bad for him as well as her because in breathing the after effect of a cigarette it is worse tan actually smoking the cigarette.

I have lived with an on and off smoker because of my mom. To be honest it is frustrating and feeds on your energy because you ask and ask and plead for them to stop until it gets worse. She didn’t begin to slow down in not doing anything for three weeks due to having her voice deepen in almost losing it. She had polyps forming on her vocal cords from smoking. After the polyps began going away she picked the habit back up. She gave in just as Pablo which just entirely angered me.

Pablo's Winter

First documentary of the festival! Loved the simplicity of the film and the choice of black and white. Although a bit slow i enjoyed the raw and realistic feel of the film. I also enjoyed the addition of the young child and how he seemed to represent hope for Pablo, improving his outlook on life.

This film dove into the life of an elderly stubborn fellow. He spent the majority of his life smoking cigarettes and mining mercury in the spanish countryside. With no music and black and white hue, the film gave a somber aura to the of life Pablo and his wife.

The effectiveness of black and white filming

Pablo's Winter was an excellent film about a man named Pablo who is suffering from over-smoking and years of exposure to mercury due to his former job as a miner. The film explores the current situation of Pablo and other remaining miners left in the small Spanish village by showing their experience during their last 40 years of life. One unique aspect that the film uses to portray its story is the use of black and white filmography. The way it uses it gives the audience a sense of nostalgia and loss, as the film uses a old medium that has long been out of use. In this way the filmmakers are able to show the melancholy of both Pablo and his town's past by showing rather than just informing.

Pablo's Winter review

This film had great cinematography by the simple visional, some of the finer views are the transition which effectively move from scene to scene.  The black and white approach added to the film with a more historic view which is rare today, most films are in color but color would have taken away from this film.

this film brings you to a personal level in that it makes you feel his strangle.
