L'Hôtel de ville occupe depuis 1835, à la suite d'un échange avec l'Etat, l'ancien archevêché, appelé Palais Rohan, du nom du prélat qui le fit édifier dans le dernier quart du 18e siècle : Ferdinand Maximilien Mériadeck, prince de Rohan Guémené. Occupé par l'administration départementale de la Gironde à partir de 1790, l'immeuble devint hôtel de la Préfecture sous le Consulat.
