It always surprised Toby how quickly a sense of peace could fall after something traumatic. The air would clear after a storm, the fires would go out leaving nothing but a lingering scent of smoke. It was almost scary, really. The calm that had settled over them, like a warm blanket blocking out the cold, as they lay together in Ally’s hospital bed, their newborn daughter sleeping silently on his wife’s chest.
“It’s amazing,” He murmured, keeping his voice low to avoid disturbing their daughter. “The fact that we made her. That we made all our children.. It’s amazing.” Toby tilted his head just enough to meet Ally’s eyes. “You’re amazing.”
