Chapter 28: Scotty Doesn't Know
of "Every Flavor of You," Part III
⬅️ Prev | Index | Next ➡️
“One-two, one-two-three-four,” Stiles called out, and then Derek was playing. Playing a bass guitar. On a stage. In front of a crowd of people. A huge crowd of people.
Well, except, Derek was kind of tucked in the back. Scott was standing at a microphone singing and waving his arms around and Kira was right next to him playing an electric guitar and doing some hairography with all the big notes.
Derek looked to his left and found Stiles, on a platform, at a drumset, completely in his element. He was wearing only a pair of skinny jeans and was moving so fast it looked like he had two pairs of arms. The expression on his face was wild and open like he was taking in every moment, living in the joy of making noise with his friends. Music even.
Actually, the more Derek experienced the music they were making together, the more he thought they were pretty good. They had a grungy sound with a lot of kick and Derek was starting to feel the groove of it that Stiles was so clearly manifesting.
By the time Derek and Stiles jumped into this world, the band only had a few songs left, and after they finished their last song, Derek felt electrified listening to the crowd roar, even if they were (mercifully) too hard to see beyond the glare of the stage lights.
---
“Good show, kids,” Finstock said as the four of them came backstage. Finstock? The memories were slower coming than they had been in a while. Oh that’s right. Finstock was their band manager. "No partying tonight. I'm not driving to Tijuana to pick you up like I had to with my last band when Greenberg snorted something and ran off with a Russian gymnastics team." The four of them gaped at Finstock, who sighed. "We got a 15-hour bus ride to Denver for tomorrow's show. Get some food, then we hit the road, and you can sleep on the bus."
“Come on,” Kira said, “I found a cute burger shop near here that still serves your table on roller skates.”
“Aren’t those drive-in restaurants only?” Stiles asked. “Don’t you need a car for that? All we have is the bus.”
“I saw tables in the photos,” Kira said. “Come on, it looks fun.”
Derek moved to grab Stiles’ hand as the four of them turned to go, but Stiles elbowed him fraternally in the arm.
“Good, show, Derek,” Stiles said, emphasizing his full name, while raising his eyebrows meaningfully. “You really played well tonight. Always the base of our group.”
---
Like Kira promised, the burger joint was a lot of fun. It had a retro vibe, with neon lights, oldies music, and booths that looked like something out of the Jetsons. All the servers wore short circle skirts, and all of the servers were guys. Derek was hypnotized. But so were Stiles, Kira, and–to Derek’s surprise–Scott.
After their particularly leggy server dropped off their food and skated away, Kira elbowed Scott, “You should get his number, Scotty.”
“What?” Scott said, face immediately flushing. “No.”
“I don’t know why you get so shy around guys you like,” Kira teased. "I saw the way you were staring at him.”
“Hey!” Scott protested. “The rest of you were staring too.”
“Yeah,” Kira shrugged, “but he made eyes at you. I think you have a chance.”
“Not like it matters anyway,” Scott grumbled. “We’re on the road in like half an hour, and who knows when we’ll be back in LA.” He sighed and looked down at the table.
Derek was slow to catch on, but it was all gradually coming back to him. Why were the memories so much slower this time? Was it because the jump in was rougher than the previous few? Was it because he didn’t remember Scott being bi in any of the other worlds that it was hard to remember here?
“Derek,” Scott said, “why don’t you ask him? Everyone is always into you even if you’re always so quiet.”
Derek felt like his entire brain stopped working. Were he and Stiles not together here? Stiles said they would only go to worlds where they were together. He didn’t like not being with Stiles. Stiles was his soulmate. His husband. Even if they weren’t legally married in this world, it would always be true in his heart.
Instinctually, he turned to Stiles, who quickly turned to Scott.
“Is our leading man here trying to get the spotlight off himself for once, Scotty?” Stiles jested.
“Dude,” Scott said, “it’s way easier to be on stage in front of a hundred people–a million people–than to ask one person out.”
---
“You okay, Der?” Scott said back on the bus. Jesus. Scott called him Der here but Stiles wouldn’t? What was going on in this world? “You’ve been kind of quiet tonight.”
“Yeah,” Derek said. “Just tired.”
“You really played your heart out, on stage there, big guy,” Stiles said. “No wonder you’re tired. Maybe we should all go to sleep soon.”
Derek relaxed a little, hearing Stiles call him something other than just ‘Derek.’ Why did his own name sound so awful coming out of his soulmate’s mouth? It was like being full-named when you were in trouble or something.
“I know you’re right, but I’m still so amped up from our show,” Scott said. “We sounded really good tonight, guys. Locked in.”
Kira pumped her fists. “We did! We rock, guys!”
“Well if you guys are going to stay partying, do it away from all the bunks at least,” Stiles said.
---
“Shh.” It came from outside the curtain on Derek’s bunk at the back of the tour bus, where he was staring at the light leaking through onto the ceiling a foot above his head.
The curtain peeled back and Stiles crawled in with him.
“Stiles,” Derek breathed.
“Hey, Der,” Stiles said. “I swear I’m getting this down, but I kind of messed up that jump.”
“Are we not together here?” Derek whispered. “My memories have been really slow this time.”
“Oh. No. We totally are.” Stiles gave Derek a squeeze. “It’s just that Scotty doesn’t know.”
Derek tilted his head. “Why doesn’t Scott know?”
Stiles sighed. “He and I both came out together at the same time in high school in this world. We didn’t know what to do with the fact that we were both sexually compatible when we had assumed we weren’t. We kind of decided that we didn’t want to risk ruining our friendship by ever doing anything about it.”
“I mean, I get that,” Derek said. “But why are you and I hiding, then?”
“Well because you became our friend not long after that, and it kind of felt like we had a rule against dating friends, but I kind of fell for you hard and then figured out you were into me too once we started touring. We’ve been doing this whole sneaking around thing for a while.”
Derek wasn’t sure what to say, so he just held Stiles to himself.
“We can just tell him, though,” Stiles said after a while. “If you want. I hope you know you’re my number one priority. Always.”
“You’re mine too,” Derek said, feeling warm. “But, these aren’t really our lives. You know? I don’t feel like we can make any big decisions for them. It just feels… wrong.”
Derek could feel Stiles shrugging in his arms. “You have impulse control, I guess. I don’t think me in any world would be shocked by me making a life changing decision on a whim.”
Derek kissed Stiles on the head. “Maybe it’ll be fun. Sneaking around.”
---
Having to wake up before anyone else was awake so Stiles could sneak out before anyone realized he was there was not in fact fun. It was dumb and immediately made Derek grumpy.
When he got out of bed, he made himself some coffee and a bagel in the bus’s kitchenette.
“Morning,” Kira said as he was struggling through spreading a single-serve tub of cream cheese on his bagel with a plastic knife.
Derek grumbled a noise that could plausibly be ‘morning’ in response.
Kira looked him up and down and sighed. “Der,” she whispered, “I really don’t think Scotty’s gonna care as much as you guys think when he finds out.”
“You know?” Derek said, his throat dry.
Kira laughed. “Even Bobby knows, and he’s like the most oblivious manager ever.”
Derek gaped. “Really? For how long?”
“Der, the only reason Scotty doesn’t know is because he looks at Stiles with the same stupid heart-eyes that you do.”
Derek slumped. This world was complicated. “So he’s in love with Stiles too.”
“Definitely. But I think it’s platonic love. He may be the front-man, but to Scott, Stiles will always be the star of the show.”
“Stiles was behind us all starting this band,” Derek remembered.
“Yup. But when Scott finds out, he’s going to be happy for you guys.” Kira squeezed Derke’s shoulder. “He loves both of you.”
---
The Denver show went great. Derek let here-him take over on stage, which made performing more fun than in LA. But his favorite part was when he managed to get a few minutes to make out with Stiles in the green room when Kira distracted Scott and took him to the VIP lounge to meet some fans before the show. But the best part was they didn’t have to get on the bus again that night because their next show wasn’t for another three days, which meant they were staying in a hotel.
“Knock, knock,” Stiles said as Derek opened the door to his room. “You got room in that king-size there, mister?”
Derek picked Stiles up and carried him to the bed.
---
Later, they were lying in the bed together, Stiles curled up against Derek, Derek stroking Stiles’ torso.
“I’ve decided the bubble thing is real,” Stiles said.
“Of all the different worlds?”
“Yeah.”
“I thought we knew it was real.” Derek said.
“Did we?” Stiles said. “I was kind of assuming it was just like a visualization technique or something, but I noticed I can’t change it. Like if I imagine the image of a face in my head, I can adjust different details, but this isn’t like that.”
“What’s it like?”
“I don’t know. Like a selection menu or something. Like I can kind of see into the different worlds, but also it’s not just seeing. I can feel them. What it’s like to be in them. What it feels like to be me in those worlds. I think those are the real feelings that I am feeling in that world at that time.”
Derek tipped Stiles’ head up and kissed him. “That’s good, right? It means you’re getting more control over it, right?”
Stiles smiled. “Yeah. I think so.”
---
Derek found tour bus life fun when they had time to make stops along the way. Kira and Stiles were both big suckers for tourist traps: biggest ball of yarn, museum of little spoons, mine-your-own-gemstones kinds of places.
There were a lot of restaurants on the road that claimed to serve “America’s Best” something. There were at least three “Best Burgers” on this route alone. And then there were the giant food restaurants. The kinds that had an impossibly-sized burrito or stack of hot-dogs or foot-tall tower of pancakes that was free if the customer could eat it all before they left. Stiles and Scott both loved those challenges. They would always fail, and then let Derek and Kira pick off extra from their plates, but they could never resist.
---
“Stiles,” Derek said after Stiles snuck into his bunk their third day in a row on the road, “do you feel recharged enough to jump soon?”
“You sick of being on stage?” Stiles asked with a cocked eyebrow as he snuggled up against Derek.
“I’ll deal with being on stage if that’s what it takes to be in a world where I can put my arm around you without having to check if Scott’s there.”
Stiles looked up at Derek. “Really?”
“Yeah. I mean this has been fun, but it hasn’t been feeling like a honeymoon anymore.”
“Yeah,” Stiles said. “I think I can jump us somewhere new. Where do you think we should go?”
Derek shrugged. “Anywhere you want. I think you should try to pick somewhere more specific. Try to get better at selecting exactly where we should go.”
“Like, to develop the skill more?”
“Yeah. Exactly.”
“Okay,” Stiles said, and he leaned forward and kissed Derek, and Derek got so caught up in the kiss that he hardly noticed when everything faded into blackness.

Have you guys ever noticed that red cat from Lupin III Part III? Initially, I only saw this cat in episode 40, but when I started watching the series again, I also noticed this cat in episode 30, and later in two official drawings for the series (although I only found one, and I lost the other). He's funny, isn't he? :3
Tried some new brushes and it turned out really well oh my god
