Plant of the Day

Here the flowers of the deciduous climber Wisteria sinensis at Pashley Manor, East Sussex, U.K. have fortunately escaped a recent late spring frost and cascade down the house. They have even been joined by Clematis flowers.

Tulip Week - Tulipa 'Blue Diamond' has a flower resembling a peony with a bowl of petals in a blue-purple almost lilac hue, at the edge of each petal the blue-purple takes on a silvery shade and has a slight fragrance. It looks very dramatic in these containers either side of this gateway.

Tulip Week - Tulipa 'Amazone' planted with pink flowered Myosotis (forget-me-not) as a striking spring display prior to the roses in summer at Pashley Manor, East Sussex. The new red foliage of the roses can be seen at the back of the border.

Tulip Week - Large double flowered tulips make an excellent spring display in containers. Here Tulipa 'La Belle Époque' catches the attention with a stunning blend of apricot-pink and coffee petals fading to the edges. Tulipa 'Mount Tacoma' has flowers held aloft by sturdy stems with buds beginning as pink and green, but opening to creamy white flowers.

The upright, deciduous shrub Staphylea colchica (bladdernut) has been flowering for a month with small, white, fragrant, bell-shaped flowers in hanging clusters. In the summer there will be large, greenish-white, inflated fruit. This plant is easy to grow in any moist, well-drained soil in sun or semi-shade. I had a pink cultivar as 'Plant of the Day' on Sunday 26 March 2017 so that indicates how long they can be flowering.
