Performance Notes 3.14.15

And the next morning I played for the last Circle Church of the quarter. It was an all-music program so I played a couple songs each with two leaders. I played pads on my MOX the whole time, with AutoPad (my pad loops in Ableton) running. I am really liking the MOX patch “Buzz Around” for the lead on This Is Amazing Grace. It seems to fit well in the mix: clear but not overpowering.

Performance Notes 3.13.15

I had the privilege of playing for vespers with a incredible group of musicians led by my friend Kurtis this weekend. We were well rehearsed and I think it showed. I think it turned out to be one of the best vespers sets I have been a part of. I resumed my station at the Bosendorfer and continued use of my laptop/MOX hybrid rig.

Setlist: Jesus Firm Foundation, God is Able, We Believe (Newsboys), Holy Spirit, To Be Like You, How He Loves.

Performance Notes 2.28.15 & 3.6.15

I forgot post performance notes from the last two weekends! For both of these I played at Circle Church: the first time with Matthew, and the second time with Jordhen. My faithful mid-2007 Macbook is becoming a regular part of my setup now. It runs Ableton as long as I don’t push it. I use it primarily for pad loops and switching patches on my MOX.

Feb. 28 set: Mighty Warrior, Give Me Faith, Stronger, Scandal of Grace, My Savior My God, Raised to Life.

Mar. 6 set: Blessed Be Your Name, Your Grace Is Enough, I Surrender All, Give Me Faith, Jesus I come, This Is My Father’s World, In the Sweet By and By.

These services were in the Black Box, which is a small performance space on campus shaped like a box. Its used mostly by drama or for showing short films. It’s always interesting to play there because you play on the floor with the worshipers and there is no monitoring, so everyone hears the same thing.

One thing I’ve been struggling with lately is getting a good piano sound from my MOX. In the Black Box, I’ve been using “Monaural Grand MW” with a compressor to try and get some sustain out of it. I’m still not happy with the sound, though. I think it sounds plucky and doesn’t have any “meat.” If anyone knows any tips for improving a piano, I am always looking to learn.

Performance Notes 2.20.15 - 2.21.15

I played keys for ASWWU weekend of worship these last two days. This involved a Friday night service and a Saturday morning service. My friend Jordhen was leading. We played a lot of newer songs and were not as prepared as we should have been but overall it was a fun time for all. On Friday night I got to play the church's Bosendorfer! Always a treat. Playing that piano is both humbling and empowering. The Saturday morning service was in Village Hall. At both services I used my MOX but supplemented with my old MacBook running pad loops via Ableton. I was also able to cook up a cool shimmer pad for You Make Me Brave!

Performance Notes 1.24.15

I played at Circle Church this last Sabbath with Matthew Burghart and co. Always a good time. Set: Your Love Never Fails, Unstoppable God, Oceans, Give Me Faith, Forever Reign, This is Amazing Grace. I played my MOX and the dusty Village Hall grand. This time, for TiAG I used the MOX patch "Buzz Around."

Performance Notes 1.12.15 - 1.17.15: Week of Worship

Just finished up student week of worship here at Walla Walla University. I had the privilege of playing the University Church's Bosendorfer. It's one of the ones with an extra fifth added on the low end. Playing that piano is always such a thrill. Simultaneously humbling and empowering. The week was very busy. We had our fair share of challenges, mostly rhythmic, but I got positive feedback for the week overall, so I'm glad people enjoyed it. It was a lot of work and a lot of fun. Vapor (The Liturgists) was our theme song, so we played that each day. Here's the rest of the sets for each day.
