In The Walled Garden, Suffolk, there was this impressive clump of Eucomis comosa 'Sparkling Burgundy' (pineapple lily). This bulbous perennial has exotic, architectural foliage with spectacular flowers that last for months and with seed-heads that are as striking as the flowers. The large bulbs need a well-drained soil and here the raised bed created by the low retaining wall and sandy conditions will be providing the ideal site within the protection of this walled garden.

The Eucomis (pineapple flowers) are being grown for a comparison of their growth, robustness and aesthetics on the Trial Field at the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Wisley Garden. This provides a great opportunity to compare these plants which are generally hardy down to around -6°C in well-drained conditions. They can be grown outdoors in the southern parts of the UK, but in other areas, are usually best in containers being moved into a sheltered position when the cold weather starts.
