Did you get your tickets yet for @154artfair NY? 🎨🔥 As part of the Special Projects at the fourth edition of 1-54 New York, South African artist Ralph Ziman @afrika_47 presents the Casspir Project with SPOEK 1, a re-imagined military vehicle. Invented in the 1970s, the Casspir became a symbol of oppression and violence in South Africa and it was used extensively by the Apartheid-era South African Police against civilians. Ziman and his team, comprising almost 100 local artists and craftsman, have transformed this military tank by covering it with beads and following traditional techniques and colour palette. The 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair NY is happening now thru Sunday, May 6th. Friday from 12-8pm is free for all students with a valid student ID. MVR 2.4 With the decreasing size and cost of computer vision, digital components, and advances in virtual reality, we are faced with a renewed awareness of the impact of current digital practices on the physical body. Returning for its second year, MVR is a lecture event series focused on new forms of exchange between body and technology developed by Eyebeam Alumni Nancy Nowacek and David Sheinkopf, Director of Technology at Pioneer Works. MVR is a platform for sharing projects and ideas concerning these new interactions between body and information, device, and action and explores an expansive breadth of subjects and technologies including Virtual Reality, Augmented reality, robots, video games, choreography, and machine learning. Speakers represent a wide spectrum of expertise—coding, dance, anthropology, furniture design— and have included Gene Kogan, Liat Berdugo, Amelia Winger, and Daniel Temkin. Throughout their career (1968–79), Ant Farm conceived a series of time capsules that focused not on the eternal but rather on the fleeting aspects of postwar American culture: consumer goods, media archives and tchotchkes. For various reasons, all of Ant Farm’s time capsules failed to function, that is, to be opened at the allotted future time and the intact contents examined. Ant Farm’s successor group, LST, has taken up the project with their contemporary work “Ant Farm Media Van v.08 [Time Capsule]” (2008). This work not only functions but updates the original’s line of questioning, exploring notions of the time capsule in the digital age. The Present Is the Form of All Life represents the first comprehensive documentation of these overlooked ephemeral works. Including many previously unpublished images, this publication also boasts essays by Constance M. Lewallen, Steve Seid and Gabriella Giannachi, and a discussion between curator Rudolf Frieling and LST. Designed by Daniel Kent.
