Shall We Dance?

     Though Ness thinks that he looks irresistible enough the way he is, his mother knows what is best for him and, in fact, it’s no surprise to see her busily fumbling with the ribbon around her son’s neck only to add that extra charm that was missing. He’s sixteen years old and he doesn’t feel shame in having his mother tie a ribbon around the collar of his white shirt, worn underneath this expensive-looking black tuxedo. Though he thinks that this accessory is pointless in the end, it does add a fancier side to his outfit if he must be honest -- but he doesn’t like how it tightens around his neck ; he’s always loosening it a little by pulling it with his finger.

     “Thanks ma, but - really?”   it'd be silly to admit that he's nervous, but at the same time he’s excited ; it's a mixture of feelings but there is sweat on his palms and across his face, pointing out that, c'mon, he's feeling tense. His mother nods and adds her own comments about how handsome he looks and how her baby boy has grown into a man. He swears it's like this every time there is a ball at school, but the red on his cheeks and the welcoming warmth make one assume that he appreciated her kind words.   He holds her hands and gently whispers a   "No, that's enough."   the moment she reaches for his collar to button it all the way up ; jeez, mom!   He knows that she wants it to be perfect -- he also does want it to be perfect and unfortgettable, but he looks fine as he is, enough decorations!   He didn’t even style his hair --- it’s not necessary, he’s fine!

     One last look at the long mirror and the woman is already happily squealing, so much that she wants to take pictures ... many pictures   ( hey, he swears she’s like this every time he wears formal clothes for a specific event )   . In fact, before he could say   “Maybe we should wait for Lucas to come downstairs”   , she’s already off to grab the camera ; oh, I will take pictures of you two together as well, but first you. On next family reunion, he can already see her showing the pictures to everyone ... uh ... 

     Please, Lucas. Don’t take too long, come save him!!

   'Oh,' Mob thought, head lifting at the detection of another esper nearby, 'I didn’t expect there to be anymore.’

   Outside of claw, Mob had not had many encounters with others who possessed psychic powers. There was Teru and Ritsu, as well as the other random esper kids that Mob did not get to meet personally, yes, but a child that might just be younger than him..? Though he knew through previous encounters to be cautious towards espers he might meet, this one at least did not feel as threatening or powerful, and much less looked the part.

   Mob closed the book he had been reading peacefully on the bench in order to rise from his seat and move to where Lucas was sitting. His stiff posture seemed awkward, but otherwise there was nothing out of order to note. The boy bowed a little as he greeted in a normal voice.    “Hello.”

     “I still can’t believe you’ve never made one of these before we met, y’know? It just sounds so weird, but ... oh well.”   it’s the same line almost every year, honestly, always cut out with disbelief.   They’ve just gotten back from the store, the chilly air outside and the cloudy sky didn’t ruin their day, thankfully. King greets them with his bushy tail waggling with excitement, the movements are slow and labored but it’s still possible to read his emotions through them. He receives a pat on the head but he soon joins them at the table as soon as the raven places the gingerbread house box upon it. He doesn’t take any participation in it, but he lays down on the carpet and calls it a day.

     The box is huge, probably the biggest and most expensive gingerbread house in the store. His family likes to go over the mile during festivities, especially his mother ; guess he has taken this trait from her, as one could tell. This one comes with the toppings, bigger biscuits to build the house with and more - as unspecified on the box.   Without even waiting for Lucas to settle down, Ness - still wearing the jacket - opens the box and takes a peek inside : the sudden sweet scent that comes out of it is enough to have his stomach twist on itself.    “Oh, eugh--!”   one thing is certain : he won’t eat this house once completed.   

     “God-”   and now he considers taking his jacket off, still he does it with that surprised smirk on his face, his attention shifted on Lucas.   “-that nearly almost killed me! Are we sure we bought a gingerbread house and not some sort of whatever in shape of a gingerbread house?!”   Did King just roll his eyes?

     “Oh my God.”   it’s everything that escapes his lips together with an airy, silent gasp. His head tilted to a side allows him to better see what’s inside the cage before to eventually find the courage and walk closer to it.   He’s surprised, when they have told him about this experiment, the Captain wouldn’t have thought it to be this... fucked up, though they’ve warned him. His curiosity pulled him to check with his own two eyes and - woah - that’s quite... surprising? Not to say another word.

     His lips suddenly curve into a smirk - whether because of surprise or because he’s feeling uncomfortable - and he begins to stifle a few giggles, incredulous. “And WHAT are you exactly? You sure look interesting.”

“Stop trying to push yourself! You can’t do this on your own!"

     ALL THIS CONCERN FOR JUST A SPRAINED ANKLE. Ness didn’t want to imagine Lucas’ reaction if he poked his finger with a needle ; what would he do in that case, call an ambulance? If anything, the attention felt nice.

     “I can do whatever I want. A sprained ankle hasn’t killed anyone.”   it sure did hurt, though. Every time the pain felt like unbearable   ( and Ness was too much of a coward to admit that Lucas was right )   , the raven would roll his eyes to the ceiling and seal his lips while internally screaming. Before himself was a flight of stairs, the one and only obstacle to his room. Needless to say that facing such a horrendously hard task under such circumstances made his temples sweat.

     Maybe ... yeah, maybe Lucas was right, after all. Of course he was. As usual.

     “Actually,”   but Ness was too proud to admit it, even if his clumsy movements clearly let Lucas know that, yes, he was right.   “I think the sofa’s more comfortable. Yeah, I’ve been complainin’ about my mattress for a while. The thing’s not so comfortable.”   nonsense, his mattress was the most comfortable mattress on the market. He clumsily limped to the living room and let himself fall on the not-so-comfortable sofa, sighing at the relief of his pain finally fading away slowly.

     “Yeah, this ain’t so bad. It’s big, comfy and the kitchen’s right behind me. Feels like a dream to me.”

     There are but empty bags on the floor — potato chips, pretzels, various snacks consumed during their movie marathon night — and cans of their favorite drinks, some of which still contained some juice left. Ness was the one who snacked the most in between movies, he shamelessly admitted it. Even looking at the mess surrounding him, he still believed that more snacks were in need if they were going to resume their marathon soon enough.

     Now, however, he felt like a break could do wonders to his eyes, sore from looking at a screen for eight hours in the dark — and also for shedding a few tears every now and then.

     It was still pretty early — around five in the morning, Ness could already catch a glimpse of sunrise ; they had a few movies to watch, still — which called for more snacks and drinks!

     In the relationship, Ness is always the one interested in movie remakes. Lucas just sits with him, pouting.

     Having to wake up early on weekends is probably the last of his favorite things ; he would sound cranky and show more clumsiness as he walks around, but it’s true that helping out in the farm has its own perks -- he gets to spend time with the sheep, which is probably considered   ‘ time well spent ’   : he likes to feel their wool against his palm ; it’s soft.

He already took care of the chickens, their constant   cluck cluck   makes him giggle under his breath as he’s covered in feather the moment he walks out of the coop. The eggs are carefully placed in a basket and -- there seems to be one or two chicks stuck in his head along with a couple of feathers ; they chirp loudly, but they don’t seem in danger at all. Somehow that messy mane is keeping them from falling down. 

He shows a confident grin, making sure that Lucas looks at the basket containing a handful of eggs. “Coop. Done!”
