Midsummer but the actors are all John Mulaney
Hear me out: iron lung would make an excellent play. the stage is nothing but red curtains, gently moving, red and orange lights overheard. centerstage is the sub, cut in half with the inside facing the audience. the x-ray photos are displayed to the audience on an overheard projector, which is black when not in use.
when the protagonist is above water, the half ship is spun around (all lights off for the reveal) and the audience is outside with the bigwigs. the exterior of the sub is painted rusty with blood, possibly dripping with something easy for production to clean up/reapply, and maybe some barnacles, etc. We only ever see the outside once, and everywhere is grays and light browns. The lighting could be too bright maybe.
When the sub goes back down the red lights go dimmer the farther it goes, when it goes too far down, only dim red lights at stage level are visible. Maybe the side curtains push in a little closer? When the lights go off in the sub the button will cast a dim green/blue glow in the sub so the audience can see.
All the flashbacks could be reduced to voice-over, since there isn't much of it and this could blend nicely with the disembodied voices the protagonist already hears, and give some great chances to react.
