Happy Monday everyone! Since I just started this blog and there’s not many seals I’ve decided to do:
Status: Open!
Ice cream sundae Ribbon Seal(dewgong): Seals will do this pose often called “banana posing”. There’s a range of explanations for this, from the seal feeling safe in its environment to it just avoiding getting wet when it’s hauled out and even thermal regulation!
Crabeater Seal (shiny sealeo): Crabeater seals actually, do not eat crabs! They eat krill and they use their cool teeth to filter feed! (I made them shiny cause pink like haha you ate too many shrimp now pink)
If you want a chance to win one of these designs you need to:
1. Like
2. Reblog
3. Reply with your fave (famous or species)seal
(fun fact: my fave famous seal is Tsuki from Tokkari center and my fave species is harp seals!)
Doing all that will get you an entry! If you send me a funny seal image via ask that I could use for practice then I’ll give you an additional entry! Before anyone asks, following is appreciated but not necessary (want people to follow for silly seals not just for a free one)
This ends on September 5th! I don’t have a time I’ll just edit this post and make a separate one when needed!
Curious on if you have any tips on making individual pokemon look unique, while keeping their species recognizable! That’s my favorite part of the pokemon team art you’ve been posting so far, since each of the individuals look super distinct but still feel like potential colorations/patterns/etc
Wait, omggg it makes me so happy to hear that people admire the art for the pokemon teams I make!! I'll try to see if I can explain how my thought process works!
Tldr because I realize I ramble too much and this became a design analysis for my OCs: Draw the base pokemon and then add on differentiating traits as you see fit. I try to keep the colors the same since that's the biggest indicator, but you don't have to do that. Think of the personality of the pokemon and how their traits will change to show that. Is your eevee shy? Droopy ears could indicate that. Add onto existing traits. Make the ears longer or the tails shorter if you want. Think of real differences in animals of the same breed or species. Minor differences go a really long way. Design themes are amazing and help you choose what you want to look different. Ex; your eevee is from the meadows! How would an eevee from the meadows look different while also still obviously being an eevee?
A lot of the times when I draw unique pokemon I make them crossbreeds! I've been making crossbreeds for @quillpokebiology for a couple of years now and my rule for them is to just add onto already existing traits so they don't look like a fusion. Ex; for Pangoro crossed with Spinda, I just made Pancham and Pangoro's ears longer, lightened their fur, and gave them spots. You can tell it's not a purebred pancham, but that it's still a pancham.
I do the same thing for my pokemon OCs, even if they aren't crossbreeds. I just try to keep plausible differences, like how dogs of the same breed might have different patterns or eye colors or sizes, but are still obviously the same breed. At most, I try to keep the base colorings the same. I can add different colors once I have the base colors down. I also tend to use traits from pokem9n of the same egg groups because I like the idea of crossbreeding, lol. Idk if I'm making sense, so I'll try using some examples.
Éclair is obviously a flareon. When drawing her, I draw her as a regular flareon but I wanted to make her more elegant, so I made the fur curled. Since she has some traits of Alolan Ninetales, I also made it lighter and wispier like Alolan Ninetales. She also has traits if Alolan Raichu and Lopunny, which is why her ears look like that. Flareon already has an undertone of blue eyes in most art, so I just made them more prominent. It's the same for characters like Ver and Pixel. Ver's grandpa was a hawlucha, so I changed the coloring to be the same shade of green as hawlucha while also having the same shape as Hawlucha's markings. I also changes the eye color from red to green, which is a minor difference, but still noteable. His hips are also connected fully to his legs instead of the oval that regular Gallade has.
Pixel the Joltik's father is an Orbeetle so as a Joltik, she has the traits of Blipbug. That's why she has her blue fur and little bowtie. The blue fur also matches because Joltik's eyes and feet are already blue.
If you want to make your pokemon unique without being a crossbreed, it's basically the same rules. Draw the base pokemon, then add on the traits you want. I'm going to use Heli as an example, because she's a unique design and not a crossbreed.
My theme for her was twilight to match with Leo's sunset theme. To do that, I chose less bold shades of larvesta. I think the biggest color change is her abdomen which is maroon instead of brown but, since the other colors are relatively the same, it doesn't really make her look much different. I made her fluff more prominent because she likes to preen herself as well, so her fur is shown in a way to make it seem like it's done-up. To match her new fur, I changed the placement of the horns to frame it better.
Thorn is another good example. I just looked at lynxes and applied those traits to him while keeping the same colors of Sprigatito. I also made him rougher looking because the entire point of him is that he was too aggressive for new trainers to want
Sorry that I rambled a lot. Hope this helps! With designing your OCs! Here are some links to other pokemon OCs that I think could also give you inspiration. I recommend looking up pokemon variations on Pinterest. It's amazing
