ththth - ok looking for advice: how do people handle naming in the narrative in 'someone else (except Lawrence) becomes pope' aus. (As in, when your story says '[the character who is pope here] does a thing', what name or set of names do you use to refer to the character?)
Even having figured out a papal name, it feels weird to use it a lot, since I basically made it up and no one is going to know or be thinking of the character that way.
Using their regular name feels weird and like it's possibly incorrect - which possibly it isn't? I also really need a better idea of how this really works; I know as a person who only hears about popes through the media etc I only ever hear their papal name basically, but I don't actually know what people who knew them before or interact with them do. I do totally do it all the time for Vincent of course, as do many people, but that feels different for some reason - maybe because I'm just used to it, maybe partially bc it's an intimacy thing kind of...?
I could just keep saying 'holy father' and things like that but that also feels weird including because that so strongly tends to be a *different* specific character (the previous pope, obviously).
How do other people do it?
If you vary it, then do you vary it based on anything?
