A complaint
[Editor’s Note: No wifi on the train so I finally have an excuse to listen catchup on some podcasts read some books and play Dwarf Fortress]
Suggestions chalked-outside the office of Dumat Adilsezuk
27th Galena
Dear Expedition Leader Dumat Adilsezuk,
I’d like to complain about the state of this Outpost. I understand this place has only been established for a few months, but I’d like a little privacy with my wife. I appreciate you’ve been working on making the fortress asfer with all these new traps and a bore hole but I don’t even have a room where I talk without every dwarf in this fortress hearing me. Plus your office faces directly onto the dormitory.
Kind regards,
Ral Boatwaxed
PS Could you ask someone to make goblets I think everyone would be happier not drinking out of the barrel.
[Editor’s Note: Ral Boatwaxed is a Dwarf From Brightmetals. Ral Boatwaxed married Kikrost Ragurun in the year 69. Ral has had two partner’s in the past. His two eldest children from his first marriage died in 84 and 91. ]
Diary of Dumat Adilsezuk Expedition Leader 28th of Galena
I found this complaint chalked next to my door this morning from a disgruntled new citizen. We’ve had 6 new migrants. In the last season arriving from the east. Most of them are content with the conditions. This beardo clearly thinks that his need to alone with his wife, whatever that means, is worth disturbing me for. If he needs a quiet place I’ve set aside a little room for prayer and contemplation.
I’ll have you know I use that dorm too. That draughty cold two-bed dorm.
We are most of the way to building a well, we do however need blocks and mechanisms. Work is slow here and although I know more migrants will mean more mouths to feed, it’ll mean more helping hands. Work is slow.

Everything's alright,
I mean we have no mugs, two chairs and we haven't dug new ground for a month but otherwise we're fine.
I have a crumby office now.
It has no door. Here's a picture of me in my crumby office
We got a little overzealous with hauling. That's why I'm so out of breath. And the fact I have to sleep on the floor half the time. There are only two beds. Someone should complain to the manager. OH, wait that's me.
Anyhow. We did managed to dig some more but I did have to tell everyone to stop hauling.
Oh yeah, and we've had a few migrants.
Farm Plots

I'm alright. We've punched all the way through the aquifer and although the bottom floor of our fortress has water up to waist height we are making good progress.

Meet the fortress's cats.
We begin excavating for farm plots.

We embark.
Situated at the intersection of a desert and two rainforests, the embark site is diverse and rich in resources. Sibrek and Nomal begin digging lodgings.
20th of Granite
We have hit an aquifer.
Mining slows and Moldath and Meng chop wood to secure the walls.
28th Granite
"Surround yourself with friends you trust and you will be unstoppable."
We break through the aquifer. Fortunately, it is only 3 layers deep. Though the work itself is boring knowing I am making a new home with my friends makes it worth it. We've come far. A full-8-days trek around the Ocean of Swords from the Fortress of Brightmetals.

Changes
Mechanisms: -3 (ryolite) (Drawbridge)
Ryolite: -3 ryolite (trade Depot)
Notes: We now have a jeweler's workshop. And a craftsdwarf workshop. Bookkeeping is steep learning curve and the work of keeping track of everything is only going to get harder.

The fortress is beginning to take shape. Although bare and without any interesting features we are building workshops.
Meanwhile, I've ordered rooms for accommodation and offices to be dug out on the lowest floor.
PortalDreams Index Post
Long, long ago a dwarfposter fucked up and forgot to Dwarf Fortress but now it's back (thanks to a helpful reminder).
