I remember talking about Monstrous Regiment and somebody telling me they didn't like it because the feminist angle and like.
Sure, that's part of it, yes.
It's also just about people though.
It's about pride and war and the people that get caught up in it without any say whatsoever, it's about propaganda, it's about comraderie, it's about socks and what they cause. It's about gender fuckery and it's about prayer and how the smallest person can change everything, how there's a difference between national pride and nationalist pride. It's about girls that went to war, it's about boys that went to war, it's about people. It's about arson and love and it's about making a mark on history. It's about when metal meets the meat and it's about holding the metal and it's about a locket with a picture of a girl and a locket of golden hair. It's about looking for family and looking for some respect. It's about being there and sometimes it's about flying machines and spilling beans. It's about taking the shilling and kissing the dutchess, it's about loyalty and where it ends, where it starts, where it leads and where being loyal means you have to stop.
It's about life around a battlefield.
It's about the dead bodies in a hut.
It's about trying so, so hard and not even knowing how to swear about it.
It's about somebody taking time to find coloured pencils.
