"Buitreraptors" 16" x 20" oil on hardboard 2020 Along the coast of Cretaceous Argentina, a pair of Buitreraptors hunt among the tide pools. These dinosaurs are thought to mainly hunt smaller land dwelling reptiles and mammals due to their elongated narrow snouts and some paleoentologists propose that their long legs would have allowed them to pursue prey over long distances. I specilate that these same anatomical features would have allowed them to also function superbly as wading predators, much like modern herons and storks. I have observed great blue herons feeding in tide pools on several occasions, and since these dinosaurs are of a similar size it seems like it would have been an advantageous niche for them to fill. The buitreraptors on th right is exhibiting an "umbrella" shadow hunting behavior (as seen in some modern heron species) to draw fish closer before striking.
