Pokemon Card of the Day #2031: Wonder Energy (Primal Clash)
In the era of tons of Special Energy, even Fairy got its own version. It, like the other type-specific Energy of the time, could only be attached to a Fairy-type Pokemon and only counted as a Fairy Energy when attached to that Pokemon. It prevented all effects of your opponent’s attacks, other than damage, done to the Pokemon the card was attached to. It notably did not stop effects like the lock from Seismitoad-EX’s Quaking Punch, so the uses were somewhat limited.
Wonder Energy was a rare sight in general, though it did get some use right before it rotated out in some Gardevoir-GX decks. While not even the most important there, it would sneak in as a tech in some of those (including the deck that won at Worlds in 2017) to stop a few things. Espeon-EX couldn’t devolve something with a Wonder Energy, for example, which could be really useful in a few match-ups. This gave it at least a small role even if such things were still somewhat uncommon.
Pokemon Card of the Day #2030: Shield Energy (Primal Clash)
Shield Energy was an attempt to bring back the old Special Metal Energy. It could only be attached to a Metal-type Pokemon and only provided Metal Energy when attached, but when it was, the attacks of your opponent’s Pokemon did 10 less damage to the Pokemon it was attached to. Note that an errata made it apply after Weakness and Resistance, not before like stated on the card.
Shield Energy saw basically no play. 10 damage was only a small reduction, though even those could matter. The main problem was that the only Metal deck that saw any traction while this was legal was Bronzong. Bronzong couldn’t actually get Shield Energy since it wasn’t actually Metal when not attached to something, so that deck was simply better with the basic Metal Energy. Shield Energy was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
