The operation began shortly after dawn when security forces surrounded the sprawling Rabaa al-Adawiya camp in east Cairo and a similar one at Al-Nahda square, in the centre of the capital.

Witnesses and an AFP correspondent said police rained canisters of tear gas down onto tents before entering Rabaa al-Adawiya, sparking pandemonium among the thousands of protesters who set up the camp soon after Morsi was ousted by the army on July 3.

Men in gas masks rushed to grab each canister and dunk them in containers of water, as the main stage near the mosque of the camp blared Islamic anthems and protesters chanted "Allahu Akbar" (God is greatest.)

Clashes quickly erupted between protesters and security forces on one side of the camp, as automatic fire could be heard. It was not immediately clear who was doing the shooting.

An AFP correspondent counted 43 bodies at a makeshift morgue at Rabaa al-Adawiya, adding that many appeared to have died from gunshot wounds.

There were no women or children among the dead, the correspondent said.

Egypt postpones dispersing pro-Morsi camps

Egyptian authorities have postponed a move to disperse two Cairo sit-ins by supporters of the country's deposed president Mohamed Morsi, to "avoid bloodshed,'' security sources said, as Morsi's detention was extended by 15 days.

Al Jazeera's Rawya Rageh, reporting from Cairo, said that the decision not to disperse the protesters on Monday came after there were some leaks to the media about the possible intervention of security forces and larger groups started to attend those pro- Morsi sit-ins.

"A security source said that with the number of protesters swelling, armed forces decided to not move in the direction of these camps" our correspondent said.

Egypt's Disarray

The situation in Egypt since the ousting of Mohammed Morsi is deteriorating rapidly. On one hand there are the Anti-Morsi protesters who wanted the President removed from power. Then on the other hand there are the Pro-Morsi supporters who wish him to be reinstated. Nearly a month has passed since the Egyptian military removed Mr Morsi from power and there appears to be no solution in sight to the growing violence within the country.

President Morsi was democratically elected. The military in Egypt claimed they were acting for Democracy by overthrowing the government. They need to respect and adhere to the values of democracy by regaining their credibility and in earning the trust and faith of the Pro-Morsi supporters. The continuation of violence against them and threats to crush the Pro-Morsi rallies will not achieve this and only create a deeper rift between the two groups and plunge the country into greater disarray, 

The US Secretary of State - John Kerry - said that the Egyptian authorities need to "respect the right of peaceful assembly and freedom of expression". A core value of Democracy, that is currently being ignored.

This picture of Egyptian army supporters shows a sea of hijabs - supposedly a sign of Islamists. How can the supporters of Morsi and the supporters of the army-led coup both be Islamists?

If by any chance the Pro-Morsi supporters end up succeeding nd reinstating Mohamed Morsi back to power, America will be quick to condemn the coup which they have up until now refused to acknowledge and condemn(Venezuela all over again) and are still providing support for the Egyptian Army.
