Literacy = Knowledge input + Knowledge output. Basically what you put in is exactly what you get out. Children are tiny human sponges waiting to fill their holes with knowledge and life experience. When you squeeze them their environment spills out. That's why its not enough that you have a great education system. Schools can only do so much in the day. A child’s surroundings and parents, or lack thereof, are also responsible for whatever that adolescent becomes.  It literally takes a team of people to create a literate adult.

Progress Blog 2: Getting the Hang

After of all of the reading and still more to read until the semester is over I am finally starting to understand and make actual progress in my class. the next step in our class was to choose a fandom. Whenever I learned about this assignment I started to think what i really enjoyed and loved so I could do my paper over it. It could be anything to a favorite TV show, movie, books etc.  so I decided to do my fandom over Law and Order: SVU.  I have watched this show since I was a little girl and still watch it to this day. So I created my Tumblr and starting to follow people share the same interest as I did. I followed couple of pages off the bat like All Thing SVU and many other Law and Order: SVU fans to help with my class. I'm excited to find more people who love Law and Order: SVU like I do and to also find out things that I didn't even know about. I will be look at different fandom actives that I will be looking for, fan art, fan-fiction, and fan quotes. I am excited to begin my work and to also connect with other who have the same love as I do.

Progress Blog 2: Conquering Fear

I am not really the best at navigating through computers and surely not on social media sites. Setting up my tumblr account was so difficult, I do not understand the concept of the website, nonetheless, I know I have to get use to visiting the site regularly. However, I have started exploring the site and gathering certain information for a better understanding of discourse communities and sponsors of literacy. I was not very confident in completing the first writing assignment, but after submitting my first draft I began to feel like a light bulb turn on in my head. I am gradually seeing a change in how I perceived this semester would go. w.c(113)

Progress Blog 2: Choosing a Fandom

When choosing my fandom I thought for awhile who would be interesting to study.  I decided to select a super hero who reminded me of my grandfather.  I have decided to select Captain America as my subject. I am familiar with Captain America from comics as a kid and the movies “Captain America: The First Avenger”. He is a fictional super hero that got his start in 1941 by Marvel Comics. The character was created by two men, Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. Captain America is also known as Steve Rogers and was an American soldier in WWII. Steven Rogers started out as a small weakling with a big heart and wanted to enlist in the Army to fight in the war. Despite being rejected several times to pass the medical exams for entrance into service he kept trying. Finally, a doctor/scientist accepted him into service due to his determination, values, and ideals of justice and liberty. The doctor performed a medical procedure on him with a secret super serum that enhanced his physique, gave him super strength and agility. With his new muscles, new agility, an indestructible shield, a red, white, and blue patriotic flag uniform, he sets out to enforce justice on evil-doers.
