Coat Guy & Homeowner

He’s bent over the sink, jacket hanging heavy on his shoulders, trying to scrape the sickness out of himself. The cold gnaws at his bones — an itch that burns — and instead of filling his body, he empties it.

Footsteps.

A shadow moves in behind him.

Homeowner, shotgun lowered just enough to mean business, casts his silence over the Coat Guy.

“Empty your pockets,” the man says, voice frayed with exhaustion.

I don’t answer.

“I’m asking nicely,” he adds, “because you won’t like the other way.”

He always spoke like that — every word carrying its own threat.

I stand there, weighing my two options: tell him to go to hell, or do what he says.

I emptied my pockets.

It’s hard to argue with a man holding a gun.
