Proviso East Teacher Inducted into National Teachers Hall of Fame

Maywood, IL... Teachers in Proviso Township High Schools know that simply believing in a student can be the catalyst for them achieving their dreams. That is why one Proviso East chemistry teacher, Mr. Glenn Lid, has been recognized nationwide. After 33 years in Proviso Township High Schools, Lid will be inducted into the National Teachers Hall of Fame.

"It is outstanding that we have teachers in our schools who are being recognized at the national level," said PTHS 209 Superintendent, Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart. "Mr. Lid sets a great example, and we are extremely proud of his accomplishments. He is a role model for the profession and, he exemplifies what is best about teaching."

Lid is the Proviso East baseball coach, wrestling team coach, and track coach. He has taught science since he walked through the doors of Proviso East High School in 1979. His awards and accolades are endless. He was a Presidential Award Runner-Up in Math and Science two consecutive years. He has won the Illinois Chemical Education Foundation Davidson Award, the Illinois Golden Apple Teacher of Distinction Award, the Proviso East High School Male Teacher of the Year Award, the Elmhurst College Alumni Award, the Disney "All-American Teacher" Award, Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association’s Assistant Coach of the Year, and now he is being inducted into the National Teachers Hall of Fame.

"I feel proud for having been recognized for my efforts, but more than anything I think this provides me a way to communicate to people the incredible stories of my students and fellow teachers at Proviso East," said Mr. Lid. "My students are just incredible."

Indeed they are. Among students who graduated under the tutelage of Mr. Lid are entrepreneurs, television personalities, engineers, teachers, and NBA stars. Many of them offered recommendations for Lid’s induction into the National Teachers Hall of Fame.

"Mr. Lid continues to reinvent his teaching methodology with his attention to trending media and ever growing imagination. However, his vision for every student that comes into his classroom has remained constant: to be a thriving, successful individual who makes a global impact," said former Proviso East student and entrepreneur, Quinnton Harris. "He has the uncanny ability to figure out exactly what makes his individual students tick, and the level of attention he gives to nurturing the gifts and talents of his students is astonishing. His words, ‘Son, you have the potential to be great. You will change lives,’ still echo loudly as I continue to paint the story of my life."

Proviso East alum, Andrea Sisson agreed.

"I remember distinctly how creative Mr. Lid was in the classroom," she said. "Never in my life could anyone have sold me on the fact that chemistry was fun! But he made it fun. Every day."

Current students offer similar remarks. Proviso East senior, Isiah Dunn, is a member of the Proviso East track team. Mr. Lid worked with Isiah on his application for the Golden Apple Scholarship. Isiah won that scholarship and is now preparing for college.

"Mr. Lid has been a big inspiration to me," said Isiah. "He is the reason that I want to be a teacher. He has inspired me to do more and to expect more out of myself and my classmates."

Though Mr. Lid’s students ring praises for his impact on their lives, he contends that the roles are truly reversed.

"My students are my heroes," he said. "When I teach, I try to put myself in their shoes. I am overwhelmed by their warmth, their ability, their potential, and the obstacles that they overcome. After 33 years of teaching, I have become a part of the fabric here. So, the award is not the reward. My reward is just being here. My life has meaning."

Mr. Lid’s induction into the National Teacher Hall of Fame allows the nation to peek into the methodologies and practices that have supported his students’ success for over 30 years. Mr. Lid and fellow inductees will be honored on May 8th during a reception at the Washington headquarters of the National Education Association. During that time Mr. Lid will have an opportunity to meet with the United State’s Education Secretary, Arne Duncan. In June, they will be in Emporia, Kansas for a recognition banquet and the induction ceremony.

Mr. Lid’s story will be on permanent display at The National Teachers Hall of Fame gallery on the Emporia State University campus.

Hometown Heroes v2: Scholar Athletes

Dear followers and @PTHS209~

I am honoring the achievements of students and young people from my hometown Maywood, IL, in an effort to praise individuals for their pursuit of a better life and to make a positive impact on the community and the world. Maywood is slowly rising from the grips of social inequality, disenfranchisement, corruption, gang violence and drug abuse. I am proud of where I come from, and it has made me who I am today, but as I move forward  in I must make an effort to reach back. I am proud my heritage, and I desire to share to world our stories.

Proviso East High School students recently received recognition from the West Suburban Conference for their work as scholarly athletes during the fall athletic season. Each season the West Suburban Conference honors juniors and seniors who participated in the conference while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better. Those students are deemed the top high school athletes and scholars in the western suburbs.

PTHS 209 Scholar of Excellence: Proviso East Boasts Award Winning Science Student

Margarito Diaz appears to be a quiet and humble senior at Proviso East High School, but to his teachers he is much more. They know Margarito as a science wiz with a knack for problem solving, team building, and complex analysis. “Margarito has exhibited a real keen sense for science,” said Proviso East chemistry teacher, Mr. Lid. “He learns quickly, he analyses very well, and he does a good job of solving complex problems.  He has really come into his own. He’s one of our strongest science students, and he has such a great future in the field.” It is no wonder. Margarito has already been given two science awards this school year. He was congratulated by the Board of Education for receiving the Baush & Lomb Honorary Science Award and the Project SEED Chemical Society Research Project Award. Margarito , who takes all honors classes and boasts a 4.1 G.P.A., spent his entire summer working at Loyola University with scientists and college students researching the structure of protein. He worked with other students and professors on a project to discover how to make bacteria less resistant to antibiotics. Now, with two science awards under his belt, Margarito says he is glad that his hard work is paying off. “These awards really encourage me to work harder and to just keep doing the best that I can,” he said. “I didn’t know that science would be my best subject, but I’m really good at it. It’s good to be recognized for the work that I put into it. I feel really proud of myself. Hard work pays off.” Margarito is not the only one who is proud. His science teachers are too. They say the awards are well deserved. “He is an excellent, conscientious student,” said Proviso East physics teacher, Mr. Beidas. “Margarito and all of our kids are extremely capable. They just have to be challenged.  Margarito is always prepared in class, and he is always willing to help others. His character is impeccable, and he’s just an unbelievable student.” Congratulations Margarito! Keep up the excellent work!

Proviso East High School Celebrate Homecoming and 100th Anniversary

Forest Park, IL...Congratulations to Proviso East High School! On Friday, October 15, 2010 the Proviso East Pirates celebrated homecoming and 100 years of service to the Proviso community.

Proviso East was founded in 1910. For the past 100 years the school has created a storied and spirited legacy. A few of the school’s notable alumni include: Gemini and Apollo astronaut Eugene Cernan, Naval designer, ship builder and sailing raconteur John Kupris; actor Dennis Franz, philanthropist Frank G. Schaefer, philanthropist and co-founder of BET Sheila Johnson, NBA players Doc Rivers, Jim Brewer, Michael Finley, Steven Hunter, and Shannon Brown; self-made millionaire Christopher Gardner (The Pursuit of Happyness), PTHS 209 Board Members Robert Cox and Theresa Kelly; Senator Kim Lightford, and Cook County Recorder of Deeds Eugene Moore. There is no doubt that East is home to some of the country’s brightest scholars, athletes, trail-blazers, and community servants. The Friends of Proviso East Alumni Organization has planned a host of events to commemorate this special occasion. PTHS 209 students, faculty, staff, and the Board of Education will all be on hand to celebrate this historic event. “Proviso East High School has been a staple in the Proviso community for decades,” said PTHS 209 Board President Chris Welch. “We are working to ensure that the great legacy that is Proviso East goes on for decades more. Congratulations to all of our alumni, faculty, and staff for being a part of an institution that has dedicated 100 years of service to the community, and 100 years of excellence.” The centennial celebration kicks off on Friday Oct 15th.  To see the full list of celebration and alumni festivities see below.
