Jaekelopterus rhenaniae
The species was first described in 1914 by German paleontologist Otto Jäckel from an isolated specimen named Pterygotus rhenaniae found near Overath in the Rhineland of Germany. Jäckel initially believed the fossil specimen to be typical of all pterygotids, such as Pterygotus buffaloensis, and therefore estimated the length of Jäckelopterus at 1.5 meters (4.9 feet).
