Part 2, Part 3
"'We'll talk later, yeah?'" You spat, rifling through your wardrobe. "'I couldn't have done it without you, Jane, you're incredible.' Yet, look at who's basking in his glory, the latest Deschamps invited to the Black Ravens. We were a team. We would have taken the spots together, but stupid Theo, with his stupid ego, thrives in splendor. With all the parties and praise, it seems like he's forgotten about me. Sure, we met up for drinks once, and he keeps sending me letters, but he's always busy. He's too good for me. Plain Jane is erased. As always." You angrily threw clothes into your suitcase in preparation for the initiation ceremony to the Black Ravens—a magical retreat during the height of winter.
Theo should be at your side, taking his seat with you.
Yet, after the Trials, your bond was just about severed.
Initially, you didn't care how the honor would be shared. Rather, you were excited. The future was bright. You were to be the most powerful duo the Black Ravens had seen for centuries, but you were painfully reliving why you avoided that crowd in college.
Once word got out that Theo was given a position on Black Ravens, the world heard no end. The golden boy, the perfect heir to the Deschamps name, was going to be the Black Ravens' newest member. He was swept into celebrations, events that you weren't invited to.
It made sense, no matter how much it hurt. No matter how hard you tried in college, the effort you had put into The Trials, you were still a Warfield. And who was that?
Nobody.
Despite how you were about to be admitted to the Black Ravens, you couldn't help but fear how people would accept you. You were certain many of your classmates would be at the retreat. They all came from famous backgrounds with generations of family who had sat on the Ravens. They had already been jealous of you in college, and you understood why—a boring nobody has risen to the top, outshining them all. How would they look upon you now?
You hoped you could scare them. You were invited to the Black Ravens for a reason.
I should have known better than to trust the Deschamps boy. I would punch him, but I want to kiss his stupid face at the same time. Lord, after all those years of hopelessly crushing over him in college, of maybe catching a glimpse of him at the firm, the tiniest bit of intimacy destroyed me. Were you so naïve as to think that he actually cared for you? Maybe he wants to be friends, but that's it. He has to have pulled the same ploy with hundreds of girls, and it works because he's so undeniably handsome and powerful.
Whatever, it doesn't matter anymore. I'm going to be the most powerful member the Black Ravens have ever seen. I'll make a name for myself.
You checked your bag and gave it a nod of satisfaction. You snapped your fingers and felt the rush of magic overcome you as you teleported. You felt snow crunch as you landed, but as you opened your eyes, the blinding white hurt your head. You were feeling a little dizzy and massaged your temples for a moment before taking in your bearings. Physical activity had never been your strong suit.
It was so much easier when Theo helped me.
Brushing the thought aside, you observed an empty clearing but recognized the hum of magic. The Black Ravens were the society that kept magic out of the eyes of commoners after all. They couldn't have anyone stumbling upon the retreat.
It was admirable that the large area the Ravens had concealed, and upon channeling your magic, you saw the veil of illusion fade as an enchanting gathering house was revealed. It had a cobbled foundation, and large windows occupied most of the wall facing you. It rose three stories, and ivy climbed large pillars supporting the structure. Glancing inside, you could see people moving about, warm light shading the snow. You faintly heard people laughing and music. It looked warm and inviting.
It didn't help to calm your nerves about being seen as an outsider.
You didn't want to give them any reason to look down on you, so you straightened your back and confidently walked to the doors.
Upon stepping inside and getting a better glimpse, you noticed the first floor was a wide balcony, equipped with a bar and lounging areas, but the area below harbored the most activity. Magnificent staircases sloped downward on either side, made of polished wood. The banisters dripped with flowers and holly as people mingled about.
You heard the doors slam behind you as people looked at the new guest. You hoped you hadn't gone overboard with your outfit. You picked out a silver dress that faded into black at the bottom. It hugged the right places, even dipping to show some cleavage. You even made an effort to touch on makeup and do your hair.
You told yourself it was to make a good impression, for this would be the first time some people would really look at you.
Rather than continuing to gawk, most returned easily to their conversations, although you caught whispers of your name floating. It provided you with some comfort that they acknowledged your presence.
You descended the stairs, hoping to see a familiar face or to engage in pointless chatter. Yet, conversation found you first.
You had barely walked ten steps from the staircase before you heard someone whisper in your ear. "You look radiant tonight, dear." You felt your insides sour because you recognized that voice.
God, you would never forget that deep baritone.
"Thanks." You didn't look behind you as you tried to lose yourself in the crowd, but hearing footsteps trailing, you knew it wasn't that easy to lose him.
His hand reached for yours, and you tried to shake it off, but his grip was too firm. Making a show to sigh dramatically, you turned and-
Oh lord.
You hadn't seen Theo in person for months. He looked good. Better than good, but you wouldn't admit that. He had grown out his hair, and it reached just above his shoulders. He looked regal in an elegant black shirt highlighted with silver, the top button undone, revealing some of his chest. You had forgotten how rich those blue eyes were, the emotion he could convey with a look. You were mildly surprised to see melancholy in his eyes and the sharp lines of his face. You didn't think he could feel regret.
"Can we talk, Jane? Please?"
"No." You felt his grip falter and took the opportunity to twist away.
"Wait, wait, wait. No, Jane, please. I know I've been an asshole, but please, just let me-"
You abruptly turned to face him. Your face was emotionless, but your eyes were cold. You didn't have time for his shit.
"I said no. You can't redeem yourself, Theo."
"Hear me out. Let me show you how sorry I am. I am so wrong, I know, but try to understand my perspective for a moment."
You felt rage curl in your stomach, something hot and unknown. You hadn't felt angry at Theo before—more disappointed—but now the bastard was asking for sympathy? "No, I know exactly what your perspective was. Poor, little Theo, with his foolish little ego that couldn't handle being one-upped by silly, old Plain Jane. He had to live up to his family name and show the world how perfect he is. Oh, aren't you wonderful, Theo? The flawless heir to your name. I get it, a Deschamps doens't belong with a Warfield. Just a thought—maybe look in the mirror sometime. Stop pitying yourself. It's pathetic. You're pathetic in every way. You are a selfish, egotistical, spoiled brat. I will revel in working alongside you every day to watch as you watch yourself realize your magic will never compete with mine."
You thought Theo was attempting to add something, but you didn't hear as you swiftly turned around, hoping to lose yourself in the crowd. You didn't get very far before being stopped again, but this time it was by a kindly-looking woman. She had pretty blue eyes.
"Pardon me for barging on you like this, but are you Jane Warfield?" You felt the anger disappearing, replaced with light. Honor. This lady recognized you. Now you were starting to understand why Theo liked being the center of attention so much.
You started to smile as you responded. "Well, yes, I am. To whom do I owe the pleasure of speaking with?"
"Ah, you can call me Azalea, dear. Why, I couldn't help but feel a little sorry for you. Theo's been in the spotlight, and it makes sense seeing how he's a Deschamps, but you should be getting just as much awareness, especially from the stories Theo's told of you."
You felt something flutter in your chest. Theo was talking about you—and from the looks of it, fondly?
"You are the other initiate. Even before the Trials, there's been a buzz about you in the magical community. After all, you did receive a full scholarship to St. Michael's. My, it's wonderful to meet you in person. How are you faring with this?"
You opened your mouth to speak, but stopped as a tall man emerged from the crowd and put his hand on Azalea's shoulder. He screamed of old money and control with his hair slicked back, dressed in an elegant suit. Yet, that wasn't what caught your attention.
He bore an uncanny resemblance to Theo. Older, yes, and his hair was cropped shorter and beginning to streak with silver, but undoubtedly related.
Now you understand why you liked Azalea's eyes so much.
"Ah, we're being interrupted. Jane, this is my husband, Alexander. Darling, this is the other initiate, Jane Warfield."
The only difference between Theo and his father was their eyes. Rather than being blue, they were a cold gray. Although his face remained neutral, his eyes held distaste. He didn't say anything and extended a hand.
"Mr. Deschamps or Alexander. Whatever you're comfortable with." The look in his eyes spoke otherwise, and he gripped your hand so stiffly it bordered on discomfort.
He turned to his wife. "I'll leave you two be in a moment. Have you seen Theodore?" You didn't like how he used Theo's full name. It didn't suit him.
Azalea didn't get a chance to answer as you were hindered again. This time by a rather obnoxious young man. "Ah, mother, father. I see you're acquainting yourselves with Jane. I hope you'll see how she's rather exceptional. I was wondering if I could steal her away for-"
"Actually, I was enjoying your parents' company," you spoke coldly.
"I wanted to speak with you in private, Theodore," Mr. Deschamps said at the same time.
Theo sighed so softly you wouldn't have caught it if he wasn't right behind you. "As you wish, father."
Azalea began to speak once they were out of earshot. "I love my boys dearly, but I wish Alexander weren't so strict on Theo. He just shows love differently."
You and Azalea continued to chat, and you enjoyed her company greatly. You understood where some of Theo's better traits came from.
Eventually, you heard a clock strike eight times, and people around you began moving toward the stairs. "My, we're already breaking for dinner. Have I really kept you for that long? I'm terribly sorry, dear."
"Oh no, it's fine. I was enjoying our conversation."
"That's wonderful. How about we continue it over dinner? Go find your parents and join us. I'm sure they would be ecstatic to meet Theo, your soon-to-be partner."
You pursed your lips, and Azalea noticed the shift in demeanor. "Or not, if that's what you're comfortable with. I know families like the Deschamps can be a tough crowd, especially if Alexander's involved. Oh, why did I say that? It was silly of me. Of course, you want to enjoy dinner in private with your family. I'll let you be on your way."
"No, it's none of that. My parents, uhm, couldn't make it."
You saw Azalea's face fall, but knew that was better than the truth.
Even Theo, with his strict father, was better than a father who would barely look in your direction. How you had longed for a mother like Azalea, but you never got the chance to meet her. When your mother died giving birth to you, your father liked to pretend you never existed. Ever since you had moved out, he hadn't contacted you once. Not when you got a full scholarship to the most prestigious magic school. Not when you were invited to the Black Ravens. Not even now, when you were to be initiated.
Telling Azalea a lie was easier than the truth.
"Oh, I'm sorry, dear. It has to be devastating for your parents to miss such a capstone event. Now you must sit with us. I'm sure you would love to catch up with Theo as well. From how he described it, you had the most wonderful experience during the Trials.
Sure, as long as she doesn't know about the library. Or the tent.
Or that night after the third trial.
Maybe if I can ignore all of that, I can pretend that Theo and I formed a decent partnership and get through this dinner. It has to be better than sitting with a group of legacies that I barely know, smiling because I have to play the part, and wishing I were anywhere but here.
Even if you wanted to resist, Azalea didn't give you the chance as she grabbed your hand and hurried you along to the upper levels, where the dining hall was. Lord, does a strong grip run in their blood?
"Oh, wonderful. They've found a table. People will be so fond of seeing the initiates sitting together."
You felt your blood freeze when you caught sight of the location. It was in the center of the dining room, illuminated by a crystal chandelier. The table was the biggest one you could see, and you caught sight of other notable families. Former classmates sat with their parents. Everyone was so distinguished.
Take a deep breath. You're going to make a name for yourself.
There was only one available seat, wedged between Theo and his father. "You know, it doesn't seem like there's room. It's okay, I'll be fine finding another area to sit," you began to hurriedly murmur, trying to pull away.
"Oh, nonsense. We have magic for a reason." She continued to drag you closer and, once within earshot, eagerly introduced you to her companions.
You gave an awkward smile and wave, and some individuals returned it, but thought some of the warmth had drained from the table.
"Theo, dear, scoot over. Let me fit another chair between you and your father."
Theo instantly complied, and Azalea gestured to the open seat. Nervously, you took it and heard her snap as another chair was conjured. She wedged it between you and Mr. Deschamps, pushing you a little too close to Theo.
Trying to look acceptable for Azalea's sake, you straightened your back and placed your hands in your lap, trying not to be a bother. Azalea fell into easy conversation with some of the others around the table, and slowly, the hubbub returned.
"So, now that it's done, how was it working together in the Trials?" An unfamiliar voice directed a question toward you and Theo.
You resorted to giving a simple answer, knowing Theo would eagerly blab about the dramatic fight with a chimera or the confrontation with Gregory in the cave. "Oh, it was brilliant. The Black Ravens were quite imaginative when putting together the Trials."
"Yes, what Jane said. Rather exceptional." Theo's tone was flat, which caught you off guard.
Thankfully, the voice let up, but you couldn't help but furrow your brows as you glanced at Theo. Whatever he had spoken about with his father had taken quite a toll on him. His eyes looked empty, and he stared straight ahead. It looked like his gaze was cutting through the crowd of people into the snowy night beyond.
His fingers moved erratically against the table, and you noted how his shirt was buttoned all the way.
What could his father have said that got him into such a tizzy?
You continued to ponder that over dinner. Dishes magically appeared, conversation flowing as easily as the free wine. Understanding that Theo was uncompliant, you tried to answer the questions individuals had for you as best as possible. Whether you liked it or not, you and Theo had become quite the popular duo.
Once they warmed up to you, they were rather friendly, even if their interactions were surface-level. You could only wonder how deep their envy ran. People had been vying for your spot, and the prospect that a silly girl who wasn't even a legacy fulfilled it was mind-baffling.
You wondered how different things would be if you came from a respectable background.
You hated it. You hated how people wouldn't appreciate you, no matter how hard you worked or how far you had come, because your ancestors hadn't taken seats on the Black Ravens. You hated the assumptions they made. You hated how they looked down upon you for even the simple fact that you were a girl.
Look at someone like Azalea. She married a Deschamps, and she fits into the crowd so well. If I married into it, if I married Theo-
Oh, stop it. A family like the Deschamps only marries others of a similar class. No wonder why Theo stopped talking to you. It's embarrassing for him to be seen with you.
Most of all, you hated how cheeky individuals tried to paint Theo and you as a couple. You loathed how it made your stomach squirm.
Eventually, as the final plates were cleared, you saw the existing members of the Black Ravens rise to the podium at the back of the room. It piqued everyone's interest, and you felt excitement building. They had an announcement. A declaration that would presumably involve you.
Although they had most of the crowd's attention, they struck a gong, which triggered silence throughout the dining hall.
Someone began to speak. "To all, thank you for joining us on this wonderful occasion. We extend our gratitude to the generous patrons who helped sponsor this event. As you know, we're gathered here to celebrate the initiation of the soon-to-be members of the Black Ravens, Theodore Deschamps and Jane Warfield." Somebody started clapping, and the Ravens fell silent for a moment, giving the crowd time to settle. You couldn't help but admit you felt a little pride. They were clapping for you.
But, probably ninety percent of that's for Theo.
"It has been years since the momentous occasion of welcoming new members, and we want to commemorate such a fabulous achievement. Along with displaying some of the best performances seen in the Trials for centuries, it's well known that the initiates formed a close bond. In true Black Ravens fashion, we must announce something to add fun to this retreat before the official inauguration.
Animated murmurs spread through the crowd. "In honor of the event, a duel will commence between the initiates in three days' time, on the winter solstice."
You felt your insides freeze. Your mouth went dry, and it felt like you had teleported across the country again.
You turned around to see Theo's expression, only to find his chair deserted.
And, you were horrified how your hand had subconsciously moved to his empty seat.
Oh, you were so fucked.
“Jane my dear”
