Has Tanaka first began his life's work as a Phantomhive butler for Vincent, or for Claudia? Does the manga show this?

When Tanaka joined the Phantomhive household

For Claudia/Cloudia, for sure, but it's only vaguely stated by Vincent. I don't even recall which chapter (or was it in "With Father"?), but Vincent says something about how Tanaka was already an old man when he (Vincent) was a kid. Vincent calls Tanaka "Gramps", just like the twins do, and that suggests that Vincent grew up with Tanaka already in the household.

I and some others here have discussed this before and figure Tanaka probably joined the Phantomhive household around 1854 or thereabouts, given the political climate in Japan at the time. If it was 1854, Vincent would have been three years old.

The direct sequel to Riding the Waves. In keeping with the rest of this series, the title of this story is based upon the kanji for shinobi

Tobirama crouches before the fire, eyeing his companion through the flames.

"Are you going to return that?" Dark eyelashes flutter at him flirtatiously, but he doesn't let himself be distracted. "I'm sure the shop would like their kimono back, and it doesn't suit you in the least."

"Yeah, it's not really my style." The man opposite him raises an arm, inspecting the sleeve and smirking. "I look good in it though, right?"

"You'd look good in anything, you don't need me to tell you that." Tobirama shakes his head. It's just like his luck to meet someone like this, so long after he lost his own honour, but there's nothing to be done about it now. "I don't mind taking the time to return it, since you obviously have other places to be."

"Aw, that's sweet of you!" The cooing tone couldn't have been bettered by any of the yūjo in the Shimbara, but Tobirama doesn't deceive himself into thinking it's an agreement. "But no, I don't think I'll let you go <i>quite</i> so easily."
