Smiljan Radic not only is one of the great contemporary architects but also, and that’s what surprise me, an avid collector of architectural drawings. One of his collection’s focal points is the radical (theoretical) architecture of the 1950s to 1970s by the likes of Archigram, Superstudio, Haus Rucker-Co and also non-architects like Asger Jorn, Constant Nieuwenhuys or Guy Debord. A selection of 177 utopian designs on paper from Radic’s collection is presented in the present little book: „Cloud `68 - Paper Voice“, published by GTA Verlag earlier this year. Modeled after Aby Warburg’s Mnemosyne Atlas the entries are organized along 33 panels that juxtapose positions from these avant-garde years and allow for insightful and surprising comparisons. In addition Hans-Ulrich Obrist interviewed some of the protagonists who in turn provide first-hand insights into this exciting period when both architects and artist sought to revolutionize architecture and bring about fundamental changes in design and context of architecture. „Cloud `68“ is a real treasure trove that contains rarely seen architectural fantasies which demonstrate the inventiveness of these decades while at the same time providing stimuli for rethinking the present.
