Raprave Belgrade
“Antipositive Pt 1″ - LITTLE BIG
Little Big! The band referred to as the Russian version of rap/rave-trio Die Antwoord ad nauseum!
True, both bands share a similar style and place a lot of emphasis on the visual aspect. For instance, former Little Big member Olympia might have been a musical non-talent with hardly any ideas behind her name but her presence in the band just made sense. However, like I’ve said in another post; just because a concept is not original, doesn't mean that the execution is. And compared their South-African counterpart, Little Big is sharper, less arty-farty and it has never shunned away from politics and biting sarcasm: "Hard Outside, Kind Inside", "Public Enemy", "Push The Button" and more recently "Lolly Bomb" have political messages and act as a nice counterweight to their fucked up videos like "Dead Unicorn", "Everyday I'm Drinking" and "Big Dick".
Another thing Die Antwoord and Little Big have in common is that both acts have become famous without ever having moved a lot of albums thanks to their brilliant videoclips. Perhaps these are really the bands of the future. Creative but more than ever embracing the visual aspect and always trying to provoke reactions.
As for the music. The albums of Little Big have always been an inconsistent hotchpot of styles. "Lolly Bomb" is trashy but irresistible euro pop, "Punks Not Dead" a semi-industrial banger. "Faradenza" has a latino vibe. Personal favourite "Voice of Hell" reminds me of Kosheen's hits "Slip & Slide (Suicide)" and “Hide U”. "AK-47" on the other hand is "karnevalsmuziek", the sort of stuff that you'd hear in Köln or Aachen during carneval. “Hate You” is a remix of “Public Enemy”, one of their earliest hits, and the title track is a mix of d'n'b and dancehall. There is not much consistency and the variation, along with the pseudo-cheap style, need to cover the fact that, apart from “Lolly Bomb” and “Voice of Hell”, none of the tracks ever exceed the artistic level of Scooter . Then again Little Big has never been about delivering the next "Electric Ladyland". The idea behind the band was a huge rave and snarky comments. Trash but fun and with a mean streak. Little Big is not about the music but the message.
And the message is that it is okay to be angry, to be sick of the forced positivity on social media, to react. An updated version of the Russian proverb “laughing without a reason is a sign of idiocy”, if you look too much into it. So, Little Big, “Antipositive Pt. 1”, any good? Nope, but that’s not the point. This is a well made parody, much like “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes” or Troma-classics like “Poultrygeist” and “Toxic Avenger”. It is fun and the albums are really just an excuse to make more videoclips and no band has got better videoclips than Little Big at this moment. Great fun!
