Hi pia, I’ve been thinking, do all raven shifters eat words or is that just a TRP thing? So all fae of the same species don’t have the same appetite?
All Unseelie raven shifters do it words/language! Most aren't as powerful with it as the Raven Prince is, and are happy just feeding off books (though mass market paperbacks etc. can taste 'cheap' to them).
No Seelie raven shifters eat any kind of words or language. :D
The biggest difference there is not actually species, but alignment! All Unseelie fae need to feed off a kind of life, whether that's cannibalism, needing to hunt meat or other kinds of fae or humans, feeding off literal life force and power, feeding off actions (like taking fae hostage, raping them, causing them heartbreak), or feeding off emotions like misery, sorry, unrequited love. It also includes feeding off the life force of a culture - which in this case includes language.
Seelie fae feed off whatever they need to eat to survive - meat, grain, vegetables, sap, but they don't need life force in quite the same way.
In Fae Tales, this is often talked about or referred to as 'what is your true appetite' to Unseelie fae. Those fae who don't feed according to their true appetite (like Gwyn, or Mosk for a while, etc.) starve, even if they eat the way Seelie fae eat. They basically begin to starve to death - which we see with Augus and Ash in The Ice Plague, no matter how much they eat, it doesn't feed their 'true appetite.'
Anyway long story short, the true appetite of all Unseelie raven shifters is language. Many raven shifters end up wanting to feed off printed or written language, and some will even write poems to friends or family as a form of 'bringing them meals.' But the Raven Prince's appetite is quite broad and unusually strong because of how he bolsters it with his power. His ability to remove language and then give it back is less about being a raven shifter, and more about using a lot of magic to understand his own appetite. Other raven shifters wouldn't know how to give something like that back after they'd taken it for example.
Seelie raven shifters can't eat language at all.
