SILVER CHARIOT “SUGAR DADDY” APPLICATION FORM: Diego
NAME: Diego Brando
AGE: 30
OCCUPATION: Horse Jockey/Breeder/stable owner
ANNUAL INCOME AVERAGE: Varies greatly, depending on race winnings, has an estimated 20 million net worth total
BACKGROUND HISTORY: He never knew his father, and his mother died early on, when he was around 10 or so. Diego had a hard life, and poor upbringing as a child in the system. Due to his smaller size and athletic prowess, however, he was able to win his first horse race at the age of 16, and made a name for himself in the world of horses. He bought the first horse he was able to win a race with, Silver Bullet, and eventually turned him into a stud and started breeding the “Silver Bullet” pedigree. Silver has fathered several race winners, one even winning the Kentucky Derby a few years back. Diego has been able to build an impressive stable and racehorse business for himself, although on rare occasions he still races. He’s made the majority of his money on bets and gambling through horse races, and is known to take more chances when it comes to his business. However, it’s paid off greatly, and is quickly becoming one of the wealthiest and most successful horse owners on the west coast.
EXPECTATIONS: Diego wants one thing out of life more than anything: bragging rights. He not only wants to be public with your relationship, he wants to show you off at the races and wear you around his arm like a rolex watch. Go out with him, keep him company at the after parties, get drunk with him and fuck when he loses- ride through the ups and downs for a good time together. Every day will be a new adventure, and sometimes it can be a little crazy, but you’ll always have fun with him. Full disclosure, he might see other sugar babies as well, no hard feelings. Also, he’s very sexual, and would definately want a partner that’s able to cater to his needs. If you’re looking for a long term relationship, or the potential for marriage, look elsewhere.
LIKES: horses(duh), gambling, expensive gifts, money, gold jewelry, card games, betting, party drugs, sex, his mom (although he never talk about her), sports, dancing, fancy cocktails, extravagant fashion, fast cars, loud music, reptiles/dinosaurs, rocks and crystals
DISLIKES: losing, traffic, family drama, his racing rivals (a former jockey by the name Joestar), being disrespected or looked down on, hangovers,
IDEAL TYPE: has a thing for blondes with tan skin, the ideal california girl if you will. Also likes someone with expensive flashy taste that will keep up with him and keep him entertained. A good dancer is always sexy, and it would be cool if they’re an animal lover like him.
IDEAL FIRST DATE: A horse race, naturally, where the two of you can bet and gossip about all the tacky hats and old money. Afterwards, he’ll take you clubbing for some “recreational fun”, or to the beach to go skinny dipping, if it’s dark enough. He’d also be happy to show you around his stables, and show you all the horses he’s bought and sired, and all the trophies he’s won.
PAYMENT: Here’s the thing-Dio loves to spoil, he loves to pamper. He loves to give others the things he never had, and having the power to do so. BUT….he likes to make you work for it. You kiss his cheek in front of a competitor? That’s an extra hundred in your pocket. You outdrink him at the bar? That’s impressive enough to earn you those new diamond earrings you were looking at before. Give him some tail? You get the idea. Diego will give you anything and everything he can,as long as you do something to earn it. That might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but Diego’s shallow, he doesn’t care.

Y/N worked the night shifts at the gym with Diego. The two listened to the police radio on the side of the ring. Y/N went back and forth on whether or not they wanted to listen to something else. They knew Diego wanted to help ever since he’d told them he flunked it at the [police] academy. Sometimes, he’d ignore them to listen to it, but that didn’t bother them.
They’d often dance to the music in their own head whilst cleaning to the amusement of their co-worker. It’d been awhile since he’d said anything about their midnight dancing over a dinner of chinese takeaway in the ring. In fact, he’d been disappearing a lot more than normal. Sometimes he’d stay away all night or even days without contact. It worried them, but it wasn’t until this time that they knew why their gut spun in circles whenever he’d run out the door without a word. Words weren’t needed when the radio said everything that was needed. Their heart sprung in their chest when Diego burst through the doors, limping with a trail of blood behind him.
“Is that blood?!” They yelled at him.
“Mostly not mine. Gimme some help.” He groaned out.
They rushed to his side acting as support more than a guide. He pushed himself against the ring before quickly stating instructions and y/n ran off toward the first aid kit. They handed it to him, almost dropping it from their trembling hands. Diego dug through it furiously for what he needed.
“Help me up on the ring.” They did as he said.
He ripped open the cut in his outfit more than it was already and put a thick piece of gauze on the wound. He swore to himself in Spanish.
“I need you to put some pressure on this. Directly toward it. Got it?”
“Y-yeah!” They did as he asked.
They never had to help him with this. Over time, they noticed the increasing amount of scars he had when around the gym, but they never asked him about it. It felt too personal and wrong to even consider it.
“I- can’t breathe.” They whispered as the blood soaked through the white fabric. Their hands lifted up and placed more.
“I believe in you.” He repeated once. “Breathe slowly in through the nose and out the mouth. Do it with me.”
They followed his instructions and kept pressure. It stopped coming through onto their fingers.
“What happened?” They whispered. “I,” He paused. “Don’t think it would help to tell you.”
“Tell me. I deserve that much.”
They wrapped dressing around the gauze and secured it in place. Their eyes met his and he struggled to look back into y/n’s. He sighed.
“I heard a robbery over the radio and I chased after it. I thought I could stop it… I was wrong. They had me outnumbered inside and I barely made it out when the cops got there. I pulled a muscle in my leg climbing some back alley fences.”
They could tell that he was playing it down for their sake. Inside, their consciousness wasn’t sure which they preferred: this version or the one building in the back of their skull and throat. Words spilled out of their clenched teeth and echoed in the empty gym.
“You could have died!” Tears formed in their eyes. “The cops could’ve handled it if you’d left it to them, stopped playing the fucking hero and stay here with-”
They bit their lip to shut themselves up. They meant every word they said, but regret over them was blossoming like the tears that fell down their cheeks. Sobs broke through their teeth’s guard.
“You fucking bastard! You could’ve died!” They screamed. Voice cracks, sobs, and echoes were omnipresent through every word.
Diego’s mouth opened and closed with nothing coming out.
“There’s people trained to handle these situations,” They said softer than before. “You’re not one of them anymore. It’s their job.”
It hurt to say that knowing what this meant to him, but it hurt more that he didn’t know what he meant to them. They’d never said anything of the stolen glances, brushes of hands and arms, inaudible words. Before now, they had no idea how little time that they could have together.
“Yours is here with-” their voice broke and paused. “Where you don’t worry about dying from being fucking attacked.” Their whisper was barely audible with everything in it just as quiet.
A gentle hand touched their cheek, “Y/N, I’m sorry… I didn’t plan on getting-”
They slapped his hand away, “Nobody makes plans for that. Certainly not! If that was the damn case, a lot more people would be unharmed or alive! Do you think you’re invincible? You’re strong! Not fucking immortal.”
They turned away and disappeared to a seating area on the other side of the gym. Far enough away to cry without his eyes and close enough to come to his aid if he-
They screamed to themselves over what could’ve happened. It was a blessing that he didn’t get hurt worse than he did. How could he put himself in danger like that? Was he still attached to his job? His desire to help people? To her? They bit their lip and shook their head. No. Maybe. Yes. Damn it! Why should that bother them right now when he could’ve died tonight? On the side, he could be an example of how lives can be saved by anyone. But what gave him that right? They thought. Maybe why they thought that way was because they were blinded by their feelings to see the effect of what he had been doing.
“Did they live?” They asked abruptly.
“What?”
“The people,” they paused. “At the robbery. Did they live?”
“Do you really wanna know?”
They knew the answer from the tone in his voice. They bit their lip.
“Lie to me then.”
“Yeah.” He sighed heavily. “They’re fine.”
“I’m glad.” Their voice cracked as they walked away.
- Means keeping irregular hours. Diego is out at all hours of the night so sometimes that means falling asleep alone however you usually wake up with his warm body curled up around you.
- Sometimes patching him up after his nightly jaunts with the medikit you keep well stocked underneath the kitchen sink.
- Diego thinks it is crucial that you know how to protect yourself. You have regular sparring sessions with him, sometimes being in such close quarters leads to things getting hot and heavy.
- These usually result in steamy showers that involve you running your fingers over every single one of his scars.
- Sometimes seeing him lost in the comforts of your home, his thumb skating over pictures of you and your family. He frowns as if he's struggling to understand your closeness, as if the concept is alien to him. You know he is estranged from his siblings but you suspect his childhood was much darker than he cares to discuss. You imagine a cold father that places heavy burdens and expectations upon the shoulders of his children.
- Tender moments tangled up with one another. Diego plays your body like an instrument; he knows all the places that make you sing out his name. He likes to build you up until you are ready for him.
- Diego likes to make love face to face, his gaze locked on yours the whole time. He likes to watch you come undone underneath him, to show you how much he loves you even though he can’t ever bring himself to say the words.
- What you don't know is that sometimes in the aftermath Diego watches you sleep. He wonders how he got so lucky, if it is all too good to be true. Sometimes he spends hours going over your relationship in his head, trying to work out how someone like you can love someone like him.
- It is rare that Diego dreams and when he does it is always nightmares. He wakes up in a cold sweat and with a predominant stutter, his cheeks flushed with embarrassment. On those nights you cradle him close and remind him that he is loved, and he is safe.
- Loving Diego is knowing that he would scorch the earth if anything should happen to you.

A/N: So this might suck, but here’s the second part. This is really just kinda setting it up for the big action-y parts. A little bit of banter, the introduction of a stranger into this weird ass family. Feel free to let me know what you think! Do have any thoughts for this going forward?
✧・゚: *✧・゚:* *:・゚✧*:・゚✧
You huffed as you sat in your car, Klaus staring straight ahead in the passenger seat. “You wanna talk-”
“No,” Klaus replied quickly, not giving you a chance to finish your sentence.
It wasn’t the first time you had to do CPR on Klaus. Hell, you had plenty of overdoses between the two of you. It was, however, the first time you used your powers to push back the group of men that attacked him. The fear of them hurting your best friend was overwhelming, stifling. You didn’t mean to let out that big of a pulse but there were hundreds of people in that building, all of their emotions filling you; it was only a matter of time before you snapped. It was also the first time you were afraid he wouldn’t actually wake up. But in true Klaus fashion, he woke up and just... left, asking where Luther went. You heard someone mention the bouncer kicking him out as you trailed after Klaus.
“Will you stay at the mansion with me?” Klaus finally requested after a few silent moments in the car, glancing over at you as you started the engine. He had mentioned the impending apocalypse and how he thought you’d be able to help earlier in the evening, it only made sense to stay the night and meet the family, though you could tell he just didn’t want to be alone.
“I can’t believe you actually slept with the furry,” you commented with an amused laugh as you poured Luther a cup of coffee.
“Who the hell are you?” Five asked as he took the cup out of Luther’s hand, taking a sip as he sat down, grimacing at the taste. “Who do I have to kill for a decent cup of coffee around here?”
You paused pouring a cup for Ben, glancing up at Klaus. “Why is a literal child talking to me like that?”
“Now, now, you two. Behave. Five, Luther, this is [Y/N]. [Y/N], this is Luther and Five,” Klaus introduced, handing you the sugar as you sat down, remembering how you liked your coffee.
“I thought you said this was a family meeting? What are they doing here?” Luther asked, groaning quietly as Klaus tapped the spatula he was holding on the table.
“[Y/N] is more like family than you realize, dear brother. They’re one of us.”
“Klaus dubbed me the Empath,” you added, taking a sip of your coffee.
“You can feel people’s emotions,” Five clarified on behalf of Luther’s hungover brain.
“And do some pretty cool shit with the energy. Like get a group of douche bags off your brother while you dance the night away with a girl,” you added, glaring at Luther who just ducked his head in embarrassment.
“Okay!” Klaus interrupted before you got more annoyed. “Is this everyone? Has anyone seen Diego or Allison? No? I guess this is as close to quorum we’ll have.” You could feel the empty space behind you grow slightly agitated: Ben didn’t think this was a good idea. “I conjured Dad last night,” Klaus finally admitted with a sigh.
There was a pause before Luther spoke up, “I thought you haven’t been able to conjure anyone in years?”
You looked to the space beside you. Did Klaus not tell his family about Ben? Did they not believe Ben was actually there? You couldn’t usually feel the emotions of the deceased, but with the bond Ben and Klaus had, you could feel him as if he was actually there. How could they not believe that Klaus could manage to conjure their brother?
“Well, no, but I’m sober now! Yay!” Klaus answered with a smile.
You stayed quiet as the brothers bickered among themselves, feeling Klaus growing... Sad. They weren’t believing him, they didn’t care that he was clean, he was missing his love. It wasn’t fair. You were about to speak up when Pogo came out of his room. Suddenly the energy went from sadness to anger, confusion. “Luther,” you warned, feeling him growing the most agitated.
“It was his dying wish, Master Luther,” Pogo said softly, looking down sadly.
You huffed once everyone went their separate ways, rubbing Klaus’ back as he sat down beside you with a tired sigh.
You were sitting on the end of Klaus’ bed catching up with him as he attempted to knit. He mostly just pulled on the yarn and sighed dejectedly.
“Get dressed, we’re going out,” Five said as he suddenly came into Klaus’ room. “You too.”
“Where are we going?” you asked, not making any effort to move because Klaus didn’t.
“To save the world, of course.”
“Oh, is that all?” Klaus asked with a playful roll of his eyes as he sat up.
You climbed out of his bed to find something clean you could borrow, tossing a tie-dye shirt toward him. You hid behind the wardrobe door to change your shirt, appearing a moment later in one of his old band t-shirts. You listened to the pair wonder about their father and how he could’ve known about the end of the world but kept out of it. You followed the brothers out of Klaus’ room pulling on a cardigan that was hanging up by Klaus’ door. Your motley crew stopped when another of their brothers ran by. You quickly figured out it was Diego, your first celebrity crush. How could someone still look so fucking hot?
“Where have you been?”
“Jail- don’t ask. Who the fuck are you?” Diego asked as he appeared in the hallway again, pulling his harness on.
“Does no one in this fucking house know how to say hello like a normal human?” you replied sardonically. “[Y/N]. Klaus’ friend.”
“Oh, yeah, we met before. I think you were high.” Diego’s eyes dragged over your body, nodding in approval. “You look a lot better now. Has anyone seen Luther?”
Your cheeks went bright red at the attention from Diego, shaking your head.
“Haven’t seen him since this morning, why?”
“Allison’s in trouble.”
-------------------------------------------------
After trying a few bars, Klaus managed to find Luther in one close to the Academy. “Look!” You all filed in, standing next to the table as Luther refused to look at any of you. “Trying a little hair of the dog, hm?”
Diego sat down beside Luther with a huff. “Give us a minute,” he demanded, waving the three away.
“Yes, daddy,” you drawled, turning on your heel to follow your friend to another table.
“Don’t make me hear that with my ears ever again,” Klaus growled, causing you to laugh.
The corner of Diego’s lip quirked at your teasing before he turned his attention to Luther.
You couldn’t hear much, but it was taking a lot longer than you expected. Klaus even mimed checking his watch to Five who seemed just as confused. Luther was out of his chair a moment later, breaking the door off its hinges as the group ran after him.
-----------------------------------------------
“So, you’re one of us?” Diego questioned quietly, looking over at you. There was a bit of time to kill on the drive to Harold Jenkin’s house in the woods and nothing to do.
You nodded, pulling your foot up onto the seat beneath you. You lowered it a moment later when Diego glared at you. He didn’t mind you sitting in the front with him, as long as you respected his car. “I can feel people’s emotions and use the energy to do things. Anger conjures fire, fear pushes things away from me, and sadness or pain causes things to break. I’ve broken a lot of mirrors because of exes.” You chuckled at the memories, shaking your head a bit.
“Happiness makes them all warm,” Klaus added with a fond smile.
You laughed again, thinking of all the times Klaus would make you laugh just to act as his personal heater on cold nights.
“Are you and Klaus....?” Diego inquired awkwardly.
“No!” you said in unison with your friend. “Jesus, no. I’m single as a Pringle.”
Five let out an uncomfortable sound at that, causing you to wince.
“Pringles are always better when you have two stacked together, though,” Diego replied, trying to follow along with your awkward flirting.
Klaus slowly slid forward, resting his elbows on the back of the seats. “Diego, brother, are you trying to get with my friend?”
You managed to manifest a little flame on the end of your middle finger, flicking it at Klaus’ forehead, smirking when he yelped.
“That’s mean!” the medium protested, sitting back in his seat as he rubbed his forehead as if to disperse the heat. Everyone chuckled at the expense of Klaus and for a moment, it wasn’t like the apocalypse was in two days.

A/N: I hope you guys like this! I’m honestly really enjoying writing this and am so happy it’s getting a good response! I’ve had this kind of idea since the moment I watched the show and just had to write it. Might be a few days before the next update. I work in a call center so I write between calls. I have the next couple of days off and have some things to get done around the house!
.✫*゚・゚。.☆.*。・゚✫*.
The car was barely at a full stop before Luther was out, running up to the house. The group followed behind as quick as they could, your breath getting stuck in your throat when you heard Luther shout Allison’s name. By the time you crossed the threshold, the heartbreak was crushing. You recoiled when another lamp Vanya hadn’t broken popped, your powers growing a bit out of control with all the emotion.
“You can wait outside,” Diego whispered, placing a hand on your shoulder.
You shook your head, trying to focus on the bit of anger that was starting to well up in Luther. He was mad at Harold Jenkins, and you were sure you can use that. Rubbing your hands together you crouched down beside the pair. “Allison, this is going to hurt,” you warned despite the woman not being completely present, placing a burning hot hand on the open wound with a grimace as the skin and blood bubbled under your hand. “Fuck. I’m sorry,” you groaned, pulling your shirt over your nose to filter the smell of burning flesh. You quickly grabbed a blanket on a nearby chair, using the left over heat in your skin to break the threads, wrapping the strip of fabric around her neck to help with any remaining bleeding. “Allison needs to get to help. I’ll drive the car she took.” You found the keys in her pocket, watching Luther carry her back out to Diego’s car.
“I’ll ride with [Y/N],” Klaus decided, following you back outside.
You followed Diego’s car, both speeding through the night. Klaus’ knee never stopped bouncing, chewing on his nail the whole ride. Diego took a few turns onto back roads, clearly using his knowledge of the cops to bypass any speed traps.
———————————-
“I don’t think she’s breathing!” Luther called once they were in front of the mansion.
Five disappeared once he was out of the car to find Grace, warning her that Allison needed help.
You stood behind Pogo as the brothers started to volunteer their blood. You were willing to volunteer your arm, but kept quiet knowing you would be denied for the same reason as Klaus. “De!” you shouted when Diego collapsed, cheeks turning deep red when you earned a look from Klaus.
You finally looked at the blood that dried on your hands and excused yourself to clean up, deciding there were more than enough people to help Allison. All the pain and sadness was devastating, causing you to shake as you watched the red water swirl down the drain. You felt Klaus walk by, his emotions all over the map. You decided to give him some space, hoping he just needed some air like you did.
You went back into the medical room to check on Diego, nodding as Grace assured you he was going to be okay. “Five? Luther? Need anything?” Five shook his head silently, Luther didn’t seem to hear you as he watched Allison’s chest just barely rise and fall. You nodded, going back through the house to find Klaus.
Hearing your friend shout, persumably at Ben, you waited in the hall. That was, until he shouted, “Sike!” “Klaus!” You jumped when someone appeared for just a moment, punching Klaus in the face, the pills going flying.
“You just Patrick Swayze-ed me! How did you do that?”
“Was that Ben?!” you shouted, causing both Klaus and Ben to look at you.
“You- He-”
“I saw Ben,” you confirmed, walking into the bedroom. You reached to the space where Ben just was, your hand passing through him. “How the hell…?”
“I think you did it,” Ben guessed, looking at the only person who could see him.
“Klaus,” you said softly, gently placing your hand on his elbow to bring his attention back to the world. “C’mon, let’s get something to eat.”
———————————
Klaus stayed silent for the first time you had ever seen. You could feel that he was confused, surprised. He ate the food you put in front of him without even looking at his plate.
You sighed, going into the other room to check on Diego with a sandwich. He was up now, nursing a bottle of water. “Hey you,” you greeted, placing the plate down beside him.
“You saw that, didn’t you?”
“The badass knife throwing Batman wannabe fainting at the sight of a little needle? Yeah, I did.” You laughed, sitting down across from him.
“You think I’m badass?” Diego asked with a flirty smirk, watching you get settled by him. “Thanks for the sandwich,” he mumbled as he took a bite, letting out a small hum of approval.
“When did we meet?” you asked after a few quiet moments, shifting in the chair to get comfortable. “I don’t remember.”
“I always check on Klaus when I’m out on patrol,” Diego admitted. “Just stop by his usual hangouts, make sure he’s still breathing. I don’t usually talk to him, but will if I think he’s in trouble. One night, you two were nodding off behind an abadoned store, a group of guys started giving you shit. One grabbed your ass, one tried shaking Klaus down.”
You nodded, vaugely remembering that night. It wasn’t completely uncommon for junkies to land in that situation. Some of your fellow addicts weren’t always as nice as Klaus and you, but people tended to leave you two alone, calling you freaks. The more that you focused on that night, the more you remembered someone pulling the guy off you and making sure you were alright. “Thank you. For helping,” you said softly, looking back up at Diego with a gentle smile.
“How have you been?” Diego didn’t want to make you uncomfortable, but he was curious.
“Clean two years. Hoping to help Klaus now that we’re back together.” You smiled fondly, pulling the cardigan tighter around yourself.
“That’s great. You look a lot better. Your eyes look… Brighter. They’re gorgeous.”
You blushed at the compliment, smiling a bit. “Thank you. I feel better. For the most part, anyway. Sometimes I’d rather just be numb, you know? Especially the last few days. Seeing Allison…” You shook your head, not trying not to get overwhelmed again. “But I know it’ll be okay if I can help stop the apocalypse.”
“Yeah, about that.” Diego finished his sandwich and marched out to the sitting room, shouting for Five. You followed behind, tapping Klaus’ shoulder to get him to follow.
———————————-
You sat beside Klaus who still seemed to be in his thoughts about what happened with Ben and his sobriety.
“That bastard that nearly killed our sister is still out there. With Vanya,” Diego said as he paced around the coffee table. “We need to go after her.”
“Vanya’s not important,” Five snapped.
“Hey, that’s your sister. A little heartless even for you, Five.”
You looked over to Klaus to see him chewing on his nails, not paying attention to the battling brothers at all.
“I’m not saying I don’t care about her, but if the apocalypse happens today, she dies along with the other seven billion of us,” Five barked back, looking up at his brother. “Harold Jenkins is our first priority.”
“He has a point,” you agreed quietly.
“I agree. Let’s go.” Diego motioned for you to follow him.
“You guys count me out,” Klaus said, waving his hand. “I mean, you know, no offense or whatever. I just… kind of feel like this is a lot of pressure for newly-sober me so….” He bowed his head, a tight lipped smile on his face.
“You’re coming,” Diego demanded.
“No, no, no. I think we can all agree my power’s… I mean, it’s pretty much useless. I’d just be holding you guys back.”
“Klaus,” you tried to reason, voice gentle and encouraging.
“Get up,” Five said much more firmly than you.
“You can’t make me,” Klaus shot back, sneering like a child.
Without hesitation, Diego threw a knife between Klaus’ legs, causing you to yelp in surprise.
Klaus held his hands up in surrender, sighing deeply. “Then again, a little exercise couldn’t hurt,” he mumbled with a faux cheerful tone as he got up to find his shoes.

A/N: I know I said I wouldn’t update until tomorrow but I had this idea rolling around in my head and had to write it. Part 4 of Empath will be up tomorrow and will hopefully be better than Part 3. I don’t think I was in the right groove and it didn’t end up as good as Part 1 and 2. Requests are open if you are so inclined. After having my writing be so private, I’m really enjoying sharing it all with you guys. I might start dabbling in other fandoms too. Maruaders, anyone?
♡´・ᴗ・`♡♡´・ᴗ・`♡♡´・ᴗ・`♡♡´・ᴗ・`♡
I hummed softly under my breath as I got lost in the rhythmic clicking of my typewriter. There was something so soothing in the act of typing. The keys reacting to my fingers, the hammers coming up to stamp the page with my words, the calming rolling sound that came from the machine as it moved the page in time with my thoughts. I was completely engrossed in drafting a press release when I heard someone say my name so sweetly. The second time I heard it, I was pulled out of my trance and back into reality: still at my desk in front of the police captain’s office.
The third time I heard my name, it finally dawned on me who was saying it. “Detective Patch is at a drug bust, Mr. Hargreeves. You’ll have to come back later,” I said, not deigning him worthy to even look up from my work as I went back to typing.
“Mr. Hargreeves, is it now? C’mon, [Y/N], you know you can use my first name. Or any name you wanna call me, really.”
I didn’t have to look up to know he had that shit eating grin plastered on his face, probably leaning against a desk as he watched me. I chose to continue ignoring him in favor of my work, until there was a box of my favorite candy dropped next to my typewriter. My typing stopped suddenly, looking over at the box before finally looking up at Diego. Judging from the amused smirk on his lips, the confusion I was feeling translated to my face.
“Thought I’d just say hello to my favorite administrative assistant,” Diego said with an air of innocence, leaning forward with his hands on the edge of my desk.
I rolled my eyes, tossing the box into my desk drawer before leaning forward on my elbows, looking up at the vigilante that only brought trouble. “I’m not getting you any files or evidence. But thank you for the candy, Diego.” I returned his sickeningly sweet smile before sitting back in my chair to look over the document I was drafting.
Diego groaned, dropping the act once I had called him out. “[Y/N],” he began, running a hand over his face, looking over his shoulder at the detectives to gauge if they were listening. “C’mon, there’s a real creep out on the street and I think I can help.”
“Then why don’t you tell Detective Patch what you know so she can, I don’t know, do her actual job?” I suggested, holding up my hand as if I were presenting the solution up to him.
“She’s not listening to me.”
“Shocker,” I replied dryly, pulling out my pen to make corrections.
I had always been fond of Eudora since starting as the captain’s assistant. She was one of the few people on the force that realized I was still an important cog in the machine despite being a civilian. I knew every single officer, went to meetings with the captain, wrote press releases, logged case files. With damn near unlimited security clearance there wasn’t much that went on in the precinct and the city that I didn’t know about. The other person who realized this? Diego Hargreeves.
Through my friendship with Eudora, it wasn’t long until I heard his story. The cocky, arrogant asshole in all black and covered in knives had a good heart, but hated rules. Raised to be a super hero, he still wanted to save people but couldn’t handle being a proper cop. That’s where the Bat Suit came in. She had warned me quickly not to fall for his flirting, he would only be doing it to get what he wanted. I would never admit it, but it was hard to not back. You would have to be dead to not see how handsome Diego was. He was charming, funny, and kind. He was kinda perfect other than that whole, ‘I throw knives at bad guys and then dash off into the night’ thing.
“[Y/N],” Diego pleaded.
“I said no, De.” I slammed my pen down on my desk, glaring up at the man. “I’m not losing my job because you wanna play hero. You should go.”
Diego stared into my eyes for a moment, as if he was trying to figure out how serious I was. When he determined I wasn’t in the mood for his game, he stood up straight, letting out a sharp exhale through his nose. “What time do you get out tonight?” he asked softly, shoving his hands into his pockets.
“Excuse me?”
“You walk home, right?” Diego didn’t really wait for an answer. “You match the description of girls this guy is going after. I’d feel better if you let me walk you home.”
I softened a bit at the sentiment, but part of me wondered if this was some type of ploy to get what he wanted in the end. “I’ll be fine, Diego. I don’t live that far.”
Diego shook his head and left without another word.

“Goodnight, guys! Great job today!” I called, waving at the detectives who were still finishing their paperwork after such a large bust. It was later in the evening than I usually left after work, but it was worth it to help the detectives file their arrest reports to help make sure they got to go home at a semi-decent hour. Humming a song I had heard on the radio earlier I started my trip home, opening the box of candy Diego bought me. If only he would buy me things because he actually likes me, I thought to myself, popping a piece into my mouth. I was so caught in my thoughts that I barely heard someone shuffle out of the alleyway. Suddenly there was someone behind me, their arm around my shoulders, and a rag on my face. I only remembered a sweet chemical smell filling my senses before passing out.
-------------------------
“Oh good, you’re awake,” was the first thing I heard as I started to come to. Slowly the world around me started to come into focus. I was tied to a chair by rope that was digging into my skin, every movement making the raw scratching feeling worse. There was duct tape on my mouth, pulling on skin as I tried to cry out. The room was damp, cold, and dark, my eyes still taking a while to adjust as I blinked the drug induced sleep out of them.
“Relax, beautiful,” the voice said, a false sincerity dripping off every word like it was coated in a thick layer of syrup. I finally managed to look down to see the man had changed my clothes. No longer in a button down and dress pants, I was in a form fitting dress that didn’t leave much to the imagination. I strained against my restraints, suddenly wishing I would’ve just let Diego walk me home.
“No, no, no. I told you to relax,” the voice said more forcefully. I just heard a crackle of electricity when a tazer was pressed to my chest, causing me to cry out in pain. “If you’re going to be a bad girl, I’m going to punish you,” the voice whispered against my ear, causing me to whimper. He brushed my hair back out of my face, kissing my cheek. I tried pulling away but that just earned me another shock to my chest. “What did I just say?” he growled, pulling my hair to force me to look at him. “Be a good girl for me. That’s all I want, a good girl.” He smiled fondly, running his knuckle down my cheek parallel to the tears that had just fallen. “I’m going to take the tape off and you’re going to be good. Okay?”
I winced as the tape pulled from my skin, taking a moment to wiggle my nose and mouth to dissipate the feeling. “Fuck you,” I snapped, spitting in the man’s face.
He wiped his face slowly, clearly displeased with my actions. “I thought,” he snarled, recoiling to punch me in the face. “I asked you.” Another. “To be good!” He finished with a shock to the chest, this one much longer than the previous two.
My head lolled forward, tears mixing with the blood on my face. I watched both drip onto the dress provided for me, silently praying to any deity that someone would find me. I barely registered the man saying he would be right back, groaning as he placed another piece of tape on my mouth before going up a staircase in the corner.
I managed to pick my head up when I heard glass break upstairs. There was a struggle, a bit of yelling and then… Silence. My heart stopped when I heard heavy footsteps begin again. It felt like an eternity for whoever it was to reach the basement door. “[Y/N]?”
Diego! I made noises the best that I could with my mouth taped shut, my silent tears turning to full blown sobbing when I finally saw him. He made quick work of my restraints, cupping my cheek before pulling the tape off. “I’m sorry,” was the first thing out of my mouth, throwing my arms around his neck.
Diego wrapped his arms tightly around my middle, refusing to let go. “Y-y-you don’t h-have to be… s-s-sorry,” he whispered, gently rubbing my back. He pulled back to look at my face, resting his forehead against mine. In that moment, I could see that he actually did care, more than just a normal victim. Diego was afraid of losing me, and not just because I had access to case files. I decided to focus on Diego instead of the pain as I returned my face to the crook of his neck. The feel of his stubble against my cheek, the smell of leather and aftershave, how warm and strong he felt.
Diego stayed holding me until Eudora made her way into the basement. Judging from the nods they gave each other, he called her and made a plan to leave undetected. I smiled when he placed a kiss on the top of my head, watching as he slipped back out of the house.

I didn’t see Diego until the next evening. As I was leaving the hospital, I saw him leaning against his car, a new box of candy and a stuffed bear beside him on the hood. “I sincerely hope that’s for me and you don’t just buy every girl the same box,” I teased, smiling brightly when I caught his attention.
“Oh, this? I was mostly pissed off that the last box ended up scattered on the street and that my favorite admin assistant didn’t get to finish.” Diego returned the bright smile, opening his arms for a hug.
“Thank you. For everything,” I mumbled into his chest, relaxing against him. Diego didn’t say anything in response, just held me close like he did that night. He still felt safe and warm, instantly bringing me comfort.
“C’mon. My family wants to meet you and my mom is making enough dinner for eight,” Diego announced, rubbing your back before letting go.
“You told your family about me?” I asked, taking my gifts off the hood of the car.
“Well, they don’t believe I actually ever save anyone so...”
“Oh, so this is just to boost your ego, not a date?”
Diego blushed, opening the car door for you. “I-i was k-k-kinda h-hoping b-both?” He winced at his stutter, blushing even more when you giggled.
“Both, then.” I placed my hand over the one he had on the top of door, standing on my tip toes to leave a gentle kiss to his lips. “Though you really don’t need a bigger ego,” I teased, finishing sliding into the passenger seat. I saw Diego smirk when he closed the door for me, clearly pleased that I wasn’t freaked out by the idea of meeting his insane family. I smiled down at the bear in my lap, wishing that this relationship had started out in a normal way, but happy I had someone in my corner.
