❛ I don’t know what I’d do without you. ❜ for gojyo // src. ( accepting )
Hakkai starting conversations like this is never a good sign.
Sure, it seems innocent enough on the surface— Hakkai is good at saying things innocuously, no matter how batshit the words themselves might be. Often enough, it’s funny hearing him drop something devastating with all the casual simplicity of someone commenting on the weather— but lines like this are a whole other story.
Hakkai smiles when he says it, but by now, Gojyo knows better. For everything Hakkai says like this, there’s a million things he isn’t saying. ‘I don’t know what I’d do without you,’ he says, which means he’s been dwelling on the idea of losing him— maybe losing all of them, but Gojyo can make one hell of an educated guess that recent events are making Hakkai feel more precarious about him in particular.
Tanned, calloused fingers rake through scarlet hair, pausing briefly to scratch blunt nails over the new mark that mars the nape of his neck.
Ain’t life just one big, lousy joke…
Not that he’s laughing— and neither is Hakkai.
“…C’mon…” Gojyo drops his hand to his side, fishing his nearly empty pack of cigarettes from the pocket of his jeans. He dips his head, eyes lowered, as he taps one out far enough to take between his teeth. His lips quirk up at the corners, in spite of the circumstances— a warm, easy smile, set alight by the flame of his favorite lighter.
He exhales a puff of smoke into the air, propping his chin up in one hand as he leans on the railing overlooking Sharak Sanzo’s place— the destruction, the repairs… they’re well on their way to putting it back together, but it’ll never be exactly the same.
Kinda like the four of them. They’ve been fired, fractured, plus almost slaughtered by some kinda heavenly brat or…something. No going back now, but maybe that’s not such a bad thing. They’re all still here, after all, and they all intend to stay that way, for better or for worse.
They’re all banking on ‘better’— all of them except Hakkai, who can’t help but fear for ‘worse’.
“Don’t go killing me off, man. What's with all this ‘without me’ crap?” He takes his cig between two fingers and lets it dangle over the edge, turning his head to face his best friend instead. He grins and red eyes meet green as his gaze fixes itself on Hakkai’s expression— carefully controlled in the way Hakkai keeps himself. Gojyo doesn’t have to be a genius to guess what’s happening behind it, he just has to know Hakkai.
He’d like to think he’s the best at that, if nothing else.
“If I was that easy to get rid of, I would’a been gone a long time ago— the same is true for all of us, right? I’m willing to put my money on that— on us, I mean— but fuck knows I’ll lose if you go betting against me.” As light-hearted as his tone rings, as easy as the smile tugging at the edges of his mouth remains, there’s something painfully genuine in the eyes that search Hakkai’s face. It slips through the cracks in his nonchalance, drawing a slight line of tension between his brows.
“…You’re stuck on something, Hakkai. It'd be tougher not to notice. It won't kill ya to be upfront with me now, right?”
