Jerad Finck w/7Horse and Dada
Date: January 25, 2013
Venue: Red Devil Lounge/San Francisco
To be fair, this was really Dada's gig and Jerad was one of the openers but he was the only reason I went. I'd never even heard of 7Horse or Dada before he posted that he was touring with them. Apparently I missed the beginning of the 90s when Dada was big because this was their 20th anniversary tour. Anyway...
7Horse opened the show and played for almost an hour. They are a two-piece band - drummer and guitar - and while the music was not my favorite they were definitely very talented. I liked a couple of their songs and especially loved a cover they did of Little Red Riding Hood but most of their songs were in a style I guess I don't really like. I'm not even sure what the style is. It's definitely rock, which I love in a lot of forms, but it was...I don't know...heavier than what I tend to gravitate toward. And it's not that I don't love some good electric guitar because I really, really do, but again, it's just the style that wasn't my favorite. The crowd absolutely loved them though and they definitely put on a good show.
Jerad was up next and after 7Horse played 10 or 11 songs I was excited that Jerad would have a nice set of music. I was very disappointed that he only played 5 or 6 songs. I really wanted to hear more. What he did play though was fantastic. He was solo on this tour, just him and his guitar, and he sounded great.
I first heard Jerad at Hotel Carolina last fall (Hotel Carolina - Day One - Afternoon Set / Hotel Carolina - Day Three - Final Set) and was immediately hooked by his melodies and lyrics. His music is definitely my style and while I really wished he would have been able to play more I loved everything he did. I especially loved that after he played his first song, Can't Stop, he turned to me, standing on the side of the stage and said, "That was for you, Carrie." Yeah. I probably blushed.
I chatted a bit with him after the show and he is genuinely nice and it was really great to see him again.
I stayed for the first few songs of Dada's set...figured I should at least check it out even though I was exhausted and not really excited about them. I'd listened to a couple of songs online and didn't hate the music but didn't love it either. I moved from my spot next to the stage and stood in the balcony and I was very glad that I did because it was LOUD. They are a three-piece band and man did they put out a big sound. Wow. Again, they are great musicians, it's just not my favorite style of music. The crowd was all in it though and clearly loved what they were doing on stage. I did appreciate that one of them was wearing a Giants jersey when he walked on stage. That always goes over well in San Francisco.
As I drove home I tried to figure out what the style of music is that both 7Horse and Dada play and I never quite got there. I knew it was rock but it wasn't the kind of rock I typically like I guess. Wikipedia says Dada is a rock band and 7Horse doesn't even have a Wikipedia page but as I just read the About portion of 7Horse's website I realized that they are actually part of Dada. Now I'm extremely confused. I guess I didn't realize they were the same people since I moved away from the stage. I'm actually feeling incredibly lame right now. No wonder they played so many songs. I guess this just proves that I'm really not a fan of this music or I would have known that already. I think I'll just end this review now before I make myself look even more ridiculous than I probably already do.
Until the next show...
Red Devil Open Mic 1/8/2013
First time playing at this San Francisco open mic hosted by old friend KC Turner. It was a cool little club with a scene. Couldn't figure out why they didn't open up the upstairs balcony seating but nonetheless there was some good performances - including a few I had seen last week at Hopmonks. I thought I was only gonna get 1 song because I was squeezed in before the featured artist but ended up playing two. The great drummer Trent played along on both tracks.
