REEF HAMILTON POST!!
Just look at him.
Sorry to bother you quincy!! Can you please elaborate on Jean?? I mean if were being critical honestly i say more than half of big waves probably has tons of casual romance but specifically why Jean is the worst when it comes to it?
Hello! ~
Okay, at least on my setting, I think I'm mixed over who'd be casual over romances. Nice or Jean are the ones I'm 100% set in, maybe Clark (he REALLY wanted a gf back then), and finally there's Bruce -but only during his lifeguard job ig-.
Nonetheless, all these characters' romances shared something in common: The people they'd bring on these flings were mostly outsiders of their usual friend circle. Tourists, fans, acquaintances, just people that wouldn't affect any of their closest relationships (<- Doesn't make it any less fucked up, though). Since his first date, Jean's romances also fell on these categories, but the only exception to the rule was enough to almost break up his friend group.
As mentioned on this BW trio post, Jean and Reef always held a close relationship, specially after Hamilton found comfort on Mrs. Baker and her bakery. And given his constant visits to the place, their relationship deepened in a way different than Nice's, to the point they'd have their own exclusive secrets. For example, Reef was quick to notice how Jean would come to the bakery always next to a different person, and the two even had a talk about it. Although Reef was worried over how it could affect Jean's reputation (specially as he started to play for a professional juvenile soccer club), he still brushed things off as "just teen love".
However, as adulthood came it'd be the turn of Reef to become Jean's new person of interest. And let's just say... Hamilton was torn about it. Sure, Jean had similar interests as him, he was a funny guy, but knowing his past experiences made things rather unnerving. Nonetheless, Reef still accepted anyway, believing that "if we're already close, maybe things can be different instead".
As the popularity around Baker was gathering more and more the attention of the media, the idea at first was to date privately for a while, and later up share it with Mrs. Baker, at least till both agreed on it. However, that day never happened, as their relationship turned sour soon enough; with the straw that broke the camel's back being a date that ended in an uncomfortable night for both.
After that they decided to call it off and return to just being friends, but things just wouldn't be the same for neither. As much as they tried, any interaction between them would become awkward and short-lived, and it wouldn't last long for any 3rd party to notice it. Mrs. Baker was the person most affected by this, as she would find strange how Hamilton would come less and less to her bakery. Reef excused himself that he had changed his study spot, but something felt lackluster. And obviously, there was Nice. Being a teammate of Jean in the same soccer club, at some point he started to notice his best friend often acting dismissive whenever Reef was mentioned, or the two just avoiding each other whenever the three had a night out.
And well, since we've talked so much about Jean yet never got onto his viewpoint... Above of all things, Baker just felt pure guilt. Regardless of what he felt towards Reef, the fact that he had dragged him into his endless cycle of flings left him embarassed, specially by how things spiralled beyond his control. As much as he denied it, he felt Reef was on the right for setting his boundaries, and he decided to respect them till they were ready to properly reconnect as friends.
Now there comes a question... Do the *three* of them even get to talk about this? Well, at least until what I have, No. They unfortunately separate for a while, with Reef staying for his studies and Jean + Nice getting contracts to play in separate teams across the country. So for few years, they only method of communication is either online or just few calls. Nonetheless, I like to picture that after their lived experiences, the three feel more ready to reconnect again and maybe address some stuff later on.

Big Waves' Character Moodboards
A long time ago, I stumbled upon a Pinterest challenge that pretty much was to search a character name + "core" (Pretty much like the aesthetic names everyone uses nowadays) and assemble a small moodboard with the results. So I've decided to do these with Big Waves.
Keep in mind these images are 2-3 years old, so the Pinterest results have changed greatly since then. Out of pure curiosity I've decided to experiment and re-do these boards with the up to date view I have of these characters, so feel free to compare results. Though I can testify that algorithm had gone downhill, because in more than one occassion I got a duplicate result :/
(Also... These are also based more on my adult/GO setting than OG, jsyk)
Quincycore
It doesn't matter if its 2023 or 2025, all the results I get will always be based on cottagecore or something soft. I don't mind Quincy being soft sometimes, but I do prefer him being more "grunge", if you get what I mean.
Also as I was researching, I stumbled upon this random picture of an anime character (I think it's from Bleach) and... Please don't tell me I'm the only one who thinks they look similar to Quin 😭
Jeancore
For some reason as I was doing the new version, at some point the Pinterest algorythm went "fuck you" and started to put EVERYTHING, from dumb comics to incredibly unrelated stuff. Still managed to find good material with enough luck.
I like the vibe of both moodboards overall, and I'm glad it didn't deviate much.
Brucecore
My only two notes for the 2nd version is that 1- This time around there was so little to actually work with, it's so dissappointing compared to when I was searching years ago 2- Yes, the beer cans are neccesary to this, I can explain (????)
...Gotta be sincere, the first version wins this round.
Shinecore
My biggest pet peeve with the 2025 version is that apparently "shinecore" got coined as an actual aesthetic (Or something), because every single image I found was mostly a cute thing with a vintage-like filter and covered with sparkles. I miss the diversity of the 2023 results :(
Nonetheless, I'm happy I've still managed to get something that fits Shine more. The pastel colors are cute, yes, but it's a color scheme that goes better with Reef. Speaking of him...
Reefcore
Another case where the older version wins. I feel like the 2025 results featured a lot of marine things (Which makes sense), but very little of other things or even anything that reminded on how I picture Reef. Plus I like the colors better on the 1st ver.
I think I have some moodboards left to do, so if anyone's interested I could share more.
HC Snippets: Joe Jones' Bizarre Adventure
A second part for BW; now featuring the obligatory Jaws reference (?)
Joe is from Queensland, maybe Brisbane. Though he lives away from the centre.
...He's quite respected on his local school, but... Mainly due to the fear he induces.
Joe is the typical jock: Huge, intimidating, rowdy, often a bit rude with those of a weaker level. I wouldn't say he is a bully, he just likes to intimidate others. Add this to the fact that he's very observant. With his huge height (He's taller than 90% of his classmates) he gets to see everything from above, and he likes to find opportunities were he can strike (At least in sports).
He also has the worst entrances, always coming from unexpected places. Like, imagine looking at something in front of you, you turn around and BAM, suddenly there's a 190cm dude staring at you. Instant shock. Joe tends to do this with even close ones, so they are not even safe. I guess its something that comes naturally from him.
Despite everything however, he's a good momma's boy. Since his father is working every single day away from home, he offers himself to do the usual housechores, even when he's at his worst days.
Because of his mother being a nanny of the neighbourhood's kids, it means Joe will have to coexist with turbulent children daily. It's a mess. To avoid issues or to avoid giving brutal nightmare fuel to any of them, he will spend most of his day locked at his room, studying or doing any other hobby of his. Too bad some children will still try to sneak in.
Quite obvious, but Joe doesn't have many friends at all. Because of his intimidating looks he repels people, and his actual atitude doesn't help much. He plays group sports like soccer and rugby, but the relationship with his teammates couldn't be called a "friendship". They are in good terms, sure, but Joe doesn't know or care about deepening bonds.
Closest thing I have for him as a backstory is that while Joe had a normal life, he struggled with social skills since little, making people straight up ignore him. In hopes to be known more he tried all he could, but it seemed futile. So giving up, he felt like the only way others could care about him was by fear.
...It sucks a lot, because Joe has a lot of interesting interests. Piano, politics, historical events. If it wasn't for his creepy looks, sometimes he wishes he could have people to talk to more. But guess he had accepted the "truth."
Like the post of the Sydney Trio mentions, Joe has them as their biggest rivals, specially Dolphin. Whenever they encounter at the field Nice will just mock him with shark jokes. Add him some marine biology known by Jean + Bea and it gets worse. Reminder kids, dolphins CAN kill sharks if able to.
Joe tries to not care about those two, but he finds them annoying. Worst thing he'll do is approach them in his scary fashion and say "Go away, bloke."
With the addition of Reef to the duo, well, things did got a different approach. Unlike Nice or Jean who talked shit behind Joe's back, Reef felt a bit different about him. More like... Pity? It was sad to see somebody who was on the same situation he had been as a child... However, he didn't knew how to act on those feelings, till the FFI came, BW was formed, and now the four had to co-exist.
Things were supposedly set in stone, Nice and Joe weren't willing to cooperate as forwards. So Reef had to step in, and try to be a mediator; but also try to check in Joe. It wasn't easy at first, given he would always push people away. But when the topic was about loneliness, things between the two started to get less tense. Unlike everybody who had feared him or mocked him, Reef seemed to actually care about Joe no matter how he looked or how he acted. Still not fully ready to give his trust, Joe gradually decided to accept having Reef around. At least this helped him and Nice to get used to each other.
Another thing that helped with their friendship was Reef's interest on Joe's move, Megalodon; to the point he begged him to teach it. The huge forward was reclutant on sharing his secrets, but he did admire Reef's determination on improving himself; something he had seen since their first match on the national tourney. In the end, Reef managed to get Megalodon too; not as powerful as Joe's but good enough.
Last hc for now: But I like the idea of Reef eventually telling Joe about his ASD. Unlike Nice or Jean who knew nothing about the topic, Joe actually seemed familiar with the topic, perhaps by the books he would read. So he managed to understand few things about Reef better (Such as his hyperfocus on marine biology or his usual shyness), and this time around, he decided to try and make him feel better in the team.
this is random but hear me out: considering the timeline alexander (brockenborg) and reef (big waves) never even meet but bet if they ever would through some strange coincidence they’d immediately just accept each other as siblings.
or alternate universe their family pulled a parent trap on them and they’re actually twins separated at birth 🤔
...Honestly? I could see that 👀
I've always pictured Reef as an only child -and a lonely one at that-, so I think he'd be very excited to have someone he could call "brother". Alek meanwhile would be so and so with the idea, he could be put off with Reef's enthusiasm but eventually get used to it. I still haven't though of how the Hausen family could be, but I feel like they could be cold enough for Alexander to appreciate the aussie's treatment.
Though since we don't know Alek's actual height compared to Endou's, I also like the idea of him being shorter than Reef by just a small margin. This leads to Hamilton treating him like a little brother for a while... At least until Alexander goes like "...I'm older than you." (?)
...Also speaking about them crossing paths, if that interests you here's my proposal of how they could meet: Given part of his family was originally from Germany, the Horst family would be interested on following their representatives around and specially since Oz lost the chance to be at Liocott. Quincy himself would be not too fond of the germans, but he would be quick to realize how oddly similar one of them looks like one of his former Big Waves teammates... Feel free to picture his conversation with Reef about it-
I'm not sure yet if the Hamilton would be interested on travelling to the tournament island unless if there's any hotel business to do there, but if they could... Reef is gonna run towards the german area ASAP.
Thank you very much for your ask, overall! 💚 I don't see them as related personally, but while writing this I grew quite fond of seeing them in a brotherly relationship. Let's hope they keep in contact after the FFI... 🙏🌳🪸
PS: Not sure if with "Parent Trap" you refer to that one Disney film...... But while I was researching, I found out the book said movie was based off is originally german. Do whatever you want with this information (?)
HC Snippets: Big Waves' Sydney Trio
...I'll admit that @//hachiiware's ask left me wanting to go on detail about other BW families other than Quincy's; so here's a compilation of my ideas for the main three.
Like I've said, Nice, Jean and Reef all live in Sydney, and attend the same school and soccer team. This is also where Robert teaches, all too convenient.
Though there's just one detail to address, that Jean was born in Victoria. After a certain family incident his mother preferred to start a new life in Sydney instead.
Nice and Jean met at the beach by a curious encounter. One typical day where his caregiver took him to the beach, Jinbei saw a blonde boy practising surf alongside his father. Impressed by the sport, he decided to combat his shyness and approach him. Despite the surprise, Nice acted friendly enough with the mysterious child, even inviting him to learn surf too. Such fun afternoon would be the start of a great friendship.
From there on, Nice and Jean would invite each other to their homes, or in some cases they'd go to his caregiver's house to watch his anime collection (Even if Nice was weirded out by the japanese cartoons). Around the time of Primary School, both boys got interested on soccer and started to practice together. Thanks to their dedication (And perhaps some potential within them), the two completely killed it once they entered the world of Secondary School/Junior High soccer; carrying their team to the finals. They might have lost aganist a team from Queensland, sure, but nothing too bad.
On their second year it would be when things got a sudden twist with the entrance of Reef Hamilton to their school, team... And friend group.
Reef had an entirely different upbringing than them. His father was the owner of a popular hotel chain across eastern australia, so he would always go into vacation somewhere new. But although he was able to meet new faces everytime, Reef preferred to isolate himself, enjoying to be at the beach. And with the teachings of his mother -a diving instructor-, that meant also spending most of his time underwater. Even when it wasn’t summertime Reef would be seen apart from the other kids.
Even if his parents tried to set his child to interact with others many times, Reef overall seemed to have problems on forging and continuing conversations, which started to raise some concerns. Just to make sure they decided to investigate a bit, and soon enough they found out their child was on the Autism Spectrum. Understanding now and accepting what their son had, they assigned him a therapist as means to help him in life, but still prioritizing his own wishes.
For a long time Reef's interests had been only about marine biology, leading to him writing entire pages about the fish he'd see on vacation. But after seeing Nice and Jean's performance on TV, he would soon develop interest on soccer. And soon he'd meet Robert Cliser, local counselor and a huge lover of the sport, who offered himself to help Reef integrate to the team while also training it.
So yeah, things went well. Reef's fun yet clever atitude blended with the two sea bros, making a well addition to their friend group. Nice and Reef were quick to bond, but with Jean it had its difficulty. What ended up uniting him however was none than Jean's mother, Bea Baker. Her being a former marine biologist soon caught Reef's attention, making him visit her small bakery weekly. The two players got soon used to each other eventually, specially since Jean did like sealife too.
Bea likes to consider Reef a second son, but Jean doesn't feel fond of that.
Now, let's talk about the Great Barrier Reef. The hissatsu, I mean. I like to attribute its origin to the fondness for the sea the trio had. Since his early beginnings in soccer Jean liked to use the sea to hone his skills, and the idea of using marine wildlife to defend the goal didn't seem that bad. So since his first years he had been working on it, but Reef's dedication and knowledge of the actual barrier helped to polish it better. Nowadays GBR is the most powerful keeper hissatsu Australia has to offer, but also a love letter to the country's natural wonder. Whenever someone uses it, Reef feels very happy.
...I guess that's the important stuff. Outside of soccer, the three like to play other sports such as beach voleyball, bowling, and surfing obviously. Jean leans it more into windsurfing but y'know, still fits.
Joe Jones/Jaws is the fourth wheel of this friend group but I'll touch it later on.
Bonus regarding adulthood; but post FFI Nice and Jean kept playing soccer, till he got into the more professional world. Reef played gladly until soccer, but a certain self-reflection he had made him instead dedicate himself into marine biology. He studies at the local Sydney Sunshore university; and yes, he if he struggles with studies, he goes to visit Bea. Best tutor ever!
