reki couldn't imagine a life without skateboarding.
it become a lifestyle since the first time his feet hit the deck as a young child. the feeling of the smooth glide of concrete under him became so familiar, that sometimes walking felt unnatural.
that beings said, it was his craft. he didn't understand snowboarding, no matter how much langa tried to explain it to him. what do you mean your feet are buckled in? what do you mean you land on the cold, frigid snow instead of scraping your skin on the pavement?
even more-so, he didn't get surfing. the whole idea of it really just confused him. you have to wax your board? wear a wet suit? when you fall off the board, you fall into the huge, rough ocean where you would most likely get eaten by a shark. no thanks.
so reki chooses to stick to skateboarding. riding it everywhere. school. home. to the beach with langa, where he was headed right now.
the sun beat down onto his naturally tanned skin. he soaked up the sun on his bare chest and bare shoulder, the other being covered with a beach towel.
he was slightly in front of langa, who was still a bit of a newbie at the art of boarding. "come on, bro! hurry up," reki urged as he turned the street to ride up straight to where the beach started. langa pushed his feet harder to catch up with the red haired male.
"i'm not used to the summer heat," langa reminded him, wiping sweat that was dripping from his forehead.
"alright, mr. canada," reki mocked, holding his skateboard tightly under his arm as he walked up the wooded ramp and onto the sand. for such a beautiful day, the beach wasn't as crowded as the two boys thought it would be.
they walked down onto the sand, finding a place close by the water. their boards laid upright, making sure no sand got into the wheels. langa bumped the volleyball he brought smugly, then caught it and looked to reki. "volleyball?"
laughing, the boys spread to a more open area and began (very badly) bumping the ball back and forth to one another. the sound of adolescent laughter, waves crashing and seagulls cawing filled the atmosphere of the beach.
reki looked out into the ocean, noticing a person shredding the waves almost perfectly. he had never been interested in surfing, but he couldn't seem to take his wide, amber eyes off the sight.
the surfer's technique and passion stuck out to him, he could see it from here. langa noticed his attention drifting away from their game of volleyball and he began watching the surfer as well.
"that girl's in our class," langa said, pointing his finger out to the surfer who had began walking back to shore. you. "y/n l/n."
you had your board under your arm as you shook your head to get water out of your ears. your wetsuit clung to your body tightly like a vice, hugging every curve in your body. your hair was wet and salty, soft beach waves forming.
reki couldn't help the blush that covered his face. he always saw you in class, hair straightened and laughing with your friends. he could tell that you were a surfer just by the seashell necklace you wear and all of the jewelry that dawns your wrists. beads, strings, homemade stringed bracelets, you were a walking surf shop.
he also has talked to you once when he stopped into the surf shop you work at. he needed a new pair of sunglasses and he saw you at the cash register, giving yourself a turtle henna tattoo on your thigh. you looked pretty, cheeks red from being sun kissed and skin tanned from all the sun you get.
he knows you two are polar opposites, being of surf and turf, but you're so sweet.
he went up to the cash register, and you made friendly conversation with him as he paid for his 800 yen sunglasses. "hey, i know you!" you said casually, a big smile covering your glossy lips. he smelled your strong, beachy perfume. "you're reki. you're in my class!"
he smiled, leaning on the counter. "yeah. you're y/n," he said, matter factly.
"i am," you giggled, taking the money he handed to you and putting it in the cash register with no change due. "did you do the math homework that's due tomorrow?"
reki scoffed. "hell no."
you giggled again. "right. neither did i." you handed him his sunglasses.
"see ya around," he said, giving you a small wave as he walked out of the store.
"bye bye!" you sweetly called out, picking up your henna again and continued to draw on yourself.
sure you are pretty. it's a given. but seeing you like this make reki's heart skip a beat. his skateboarding was your surfing. your craft.
your life.
he could just tell that you love what you do. you walked over to your bag, placing your board down and sitting on it. you took out a hair brush and began to brush and scrunch your hair.
you threw an oversized t-shirt over your wetsuit, and you began to strip your wetsuit from under your shirt. it was so clever. both reki and langa looked away, not wanting to be pervy.
you had a bikini bottom on underneath, and you slipped a pair of linen pants on over them. your gaze landed on the boys, and you immediately recognized them.
"hi!" you yelled out, waving to them, you ran up to them, and reki thought he died and went to heaven as you approached them.
you were like a walking angel. your hair was already drying, pretty curls forming instead of your usual long, straightened hair that he sees in school. your face was completely bare, no mascara and all your blush natural from the sun. soft freckles adorned your face.
reki swore he fell in love right there.
"hey, guys!" you said, eyeing the volleyball. "oo! can i play?"
"yeah! of course," reki said, while langa smiled and nodded.
the three of you bumped the ball to each other, running into one another as laughter filled the air once again.
about an hour passed when langa heard the familiar tune of his phone ringing. he ran over to his cell phone, picking up the call. a few murmured words were heard before he hung up and turned to you and reki.
"my mom wants me home for dinner," he said, grabbing his towel and skateboard.
"aww, alright! bye, langa!" you waved, smiling.
"bye, guys," the blue haired male smiled, turning and walking away.
"do you need your volleyball?" reki called out. langa didn't even turn around.
"nah!" langa yelled over his shoulder. "just bring it next time we hang out."
langa disappeared over the ramp, leaving you and reki alone on the beach.
"is skateboarding fun?" you asked almost immediately, not wanting to make him feel awkward. you know how uncomfortable it can get when you're hanging out with friends and suddenly, your left alone with a person you barely know.
he smiled, bumping the ball to you. "yeah! i've been skating since i was a little boy."
"really? that's so cool!" you marveled. "you must be really good."
reki humbly shrugged. the two of you played with that ball for hours, talking about your pasts regarding your passions. he learned when your love of surfing began. you two talked about everything, life, siblings, parents, friends, school.
the sun began to set over the horizon as you two sat down to watch the sun setting. "you have to teach me how to skate one day," you said, taking your gaze away from the beautiful sight in front of you to look into his amber eyes that were already looking at you.
rei's face flushed red at how close your face was to his. "definitely," he muttered, smiling softly.
the two of you watched the sun set a little more before you got up. "you gonna teach me how to skate the way home or what?" you giggled, sticking out your hand to help him up out of the sand.
he chuckled, taking your hand and standing up. "alright, let's do it!"
the two of you laughed as you ran to your separate bags. reki slipped on a hoodie and grabbed his towel and skateboard. you walked over to him with your huge board under your arm and beach bag slung over your shoulder. "put your volleyball in my bag," you offered, and he obliged almost immediately.
"if i'm gonna teach you to skate, you can't have all this crap in your hands," he said, switching your surfboard for his skateboard. you smiled up at him, walking up the wooded ramp and onto the sidewalk again.
reki began to patiently explain the basics of skateboarding to you, where to plant your feet and how to push. he was shocked as you so naturally swung your foot on the pavement. "like this?" you asked, going slow so you weren't ahead of him.
he smiled widely, nodding. "yeah. you're doing it perfectly." you giggled again, squealing as you tripped backwards. he grabbed your hand tightly, keeping you upright.
"woah, thanks!" you said.
he simply smiled, holding onto your hand gently to guide you as you rode on his skateboard. "so you make these?" you asked, guiding him to the direction of your house. right by the beach. how fitting for you.
"mhm!" reki murmured humbly, not wanting to show off. hushed conversation filled the streets as the horizon was turning dark. you stopped in front of your house.
"thanks for hangin' with me today," you said, smoothly stepping off the skateboard as if you were a pro.
"of course," reki said, running a hand through his soft, red hair. he thought it was funny that you were thanking him, as if he just did you a massive favor. if anything, you did him a favor by blessing him with your presence.
"wait!" you yelped, taking out your phone. "i totally don't have your number."
you handed him your phone, and he gently took it and put in his number. he made his contact name 'reki the best skater ever' . it was corny, but it made you laugh which is all that matters. "as long as you put my name as 'y/n the best surfer ever' i won't change your name." you pressed the call button for a second so your number saved on his phone. you took your surfboard back and smiled.
"call me," you say, doing your signature thumb and pinky up hand shake before walking through your front door and shutting the door behind you.
reki stood outside your door, face bright red. he knew he was in love. despite you not knowing anything about skateboarding, he wanted to show and tell you everything and even bring you to an 's' race one day.
he couldn't help it. copying your hand motion to himself, he turned around and skated back to his house, knowing that he had just fallen for his polar opposite.
