dad did have his hearing aids until he was about five, when the batteries died & they couldn't find replacements

bow tension is somewhere in the hundreds of pounds.

There are no batteries on Battleworld, so when Clint’s hearing aids started to fail, he began to use them less and less. Jen learned sign language in order to communicate with him -- he does lipread, but it helps to get him to focus on what’s being said. When their son was born, he made sure they were in so he could hear the baby’s first cries (and how much Jen swore at him because let’s face it, CJ has been big since birth).

CJ learned early on that to get his father’s attention, the best way was to stamp on the floor so he could feel the vibration. He sometimes still does it without thinking when he’s trying to get someone’s attention.
