How to Know If Your Appliance Is Worth Repairing (Honest Answer)
Everyone asks this eventually: is this appliance worth fixing or should I just buy a new one?
Here is the honest answer our technicians use every day.
Under 7 years old? Repair it unless the damage is catastrophic. Appliances in this age range almost always have repair costs well under 50% of replacement cost.
7 to 10 years old? Repair if it is a single issue and the appliance has been reliable. Start thinking about replacement if it has had multiple repairs in the past year.
10 to 13 years old? Evaluate carefully. A minor repair makes sense. A major repair — like a compressor replacement or a control board — may not pencil out when you factor in the age.
Over 13 years? Unless it is a very minor fix, replacement is usually the smarter long-term move.
The other factor people forget: energy efficiency. Appliances from 10+ years ago use significantly more electricity than modern equivalents. Sometimes the energy savings from a new appliance partially justifies the replacement cost over a few years.
