                Alright, in one of the memes I posted today I brought up the fact I don’t think Jayce Talis’s efforts with Zaun are to be congratulated. I got a reply about Jayce Talis doing much better than any other council members in the short time he was there. (Also this person is being very nice and letting me use their reply, please do not harass them.)

And they are absolutely correct. Jayce Talis did more for Piltover than any of the other council members. He was the most ethical member of the that council. Even Heimadinger was guilty of neglect. Jayce is trying his best, and his best is pretty dang good-

              For Piltover.

              The problem comes from the fact Jayce isn’t just governing Piltover, he’s overseeing Zaun as well.

The system set up in Piltover is set up so there are no ethical choices to be made by any council member- outside of an overhaul of the system. This presents its own problems.  We see this back and forth between Silco and Vander’s point of view in the first three episodes- but from Zaun’s point of view.

For there to be justice for Zaun, Piltover must pay. I don’t mean this in a karmic sense, or even as punishment. Piltover has done irreparable harm to Zaun. If someone took my life’s savings- for justice to be done, I would expect my lifesaving’s back. Taking the money would be taking my retirement, my house, and any future college fund from a child I would want to support. In case of a health problem (I am from the U.S.) it could mean my life or my health. If a person took my life savings- part of the reparations would be getting the money back.

Jayce is taking a risk offering peace. He knows he is going to probably lose his council seat- so he does the best in his ability to look at the situation and say “I want peace.”

What Jayce did not want was justice. Nor did he offer it to Silco, though to be fair I doubt Silco would have expected it. With the original Shimmer plan, Silco was aiming for the result that he got- which was non-interference- or the bare minimum. He was realistic in his hopes and he got what he came for. But that is another post.

Piltover poisoned the air of Zaun, poisoned the water. They increased trade and commerce, but Zaun didn’t see any of it.

From an earlier point in the show- Jayce was not thrown in jail for storing multiple bombs correctly. He was put in a nice cell and threatened with having to live somewhere else. I am assuming that Jayce’s father’s business could at least get him enough money to live on elsewhere. He was at least a skilled craftsmen in good health.

Lets cut to what the council was doing to Zaun. Four children robbed an apartment, they didn’t know about any bombs. Piltover’s council sent armed forces to physically assault people who had no connection to the crime- because they lived in Zaun. These forces had no problem choking people, throwing them through a window, and throwing weapons at people who had done nothing wrong. Even Greyson, who is supposed to seem friendly to the audience, isn’t concerned with justice- she’s concerned with hurting Zaun enough for the council to be satisfied so they can go back to the status quo.

I really understand Sevika’s rage when I think about it. These people grew up with worse.

              Justice for Zaun would require independence, but it would also require financial reparations, the river to be fixed, the air to be cleaned and for the healthcare of Zaun’s ill to be seen to-

              And all of it would have to be done with the understanding Zaun would have jurisdiction over all of it. Zaun would have to be seen as an equal state and treated diplomatically.

              But here is where Jayce Talis fails- because the system is set up so Jayce cannot understand nor rectify Piltover’s damage. He has been raised, and trained by the council, to see the Undercity as the enemy while still holding on to the idea that Zaun is somehow lesser than Piltover.

              This is shown when the bridge is shut down- which to my knowledge has cut off trade (Which could mean people were not getting food or medicine- or to work which means no money to get food or medicine).  It is shown when he absently threatens Vi with jail. Both she and Viktor are aware of the damage he is doing, while Jayce himself doesn’t seem to be aware of the broad sweeping changes he is making to other people’s lives with his words. When he gained power, he was taught by unethical people on how to use the power. He was not consulting people who had grown up under the corrupt system, but rather the ones who benefited from it.

              And to Jayce’s credit, he does seem to have a sense something is not right, though his need to make changes manifests in military action instead of helping Viktor.

              Jayce was set up to fail.

              So, when he suggests peace to Silco after he killed multiple people in a factory, I am cheering for him.

              YES! YES! YES!

              He figured it out.

              But then he adds conditions.

              These conditions undercut Zaun’s independence and authority. He wants to imprison/kill/punish a soldier under Silco’s command. He doesn’t want to take her to trial. He even agrees it was Silco’s responsibiitly. We are back to Piltover wanting a pound of flesh instead of justice and assuming its their right even when giving the rights away.

              I want to be open to Jayce meaning well with the closure of the Shimmer factories, but combined with returning the gemstone- especially when we saw the silo full of them early in the series- Jayce is taking away any defensive measures Zaun might have.

              (Now, to step outside this for a moment- I don’t believe for a second Silco would actually stop Shimmer production, just like I believe he wouldn’t give up Jinx. Making Zaun completely vunerable to attack seems out of character- but ignoring that for now.)

              So, Jayce Talis says to the Undercity- who has been made ill, starved, beaten- sometimes by him personally- “I could kill you, but if you agree to go away, I won’t.” This is not Justice and this is less than the bare minimum Zaun deserves.

              (The great thing about Arcane is we see this from his point of view too. This is a great moment of growth for him. The moment the bomb hits the council room a great moment of tragedy. The Man of Progress made a difference in the council only for it to be pulled away at the last second. I can feel a great deal of sympathy for the fact Jayce wasn’t given more time to grow. But from Zaun’s point of view, did their independence need to be dictated by people holding a knife to their throat?)

I’ll be honest -- I heard about the Evillious collab in Japan last year, and some friends tried to get me into it.  I refused and said that I’d download it and play on the grounds that the Evillious collab came to the English version of Project Sekai.  On December 8th, a friend tagged me in Discord, showed the event would be in the English version, and told me that I’d better start playing.

I spent up until the last second of the event farming for crystals and asking a plethora of questions because I really didn’t know what I was doing.  Ultimately, I got about 50,000 crystals, and then got incredibly, disproportionately lucky during the latter half of my pulls.  I enjoy the game and play it a lot more now, but having a consistent group of people who knew the game helping, a lot of dedicated farming, and the rest of the luck I’ll ever have in my life all went into actually getting the cards in the event.

Anyway... rambling aside, I finally managed to unlock both parts of everyone’s story, so at some point I’m hoping to post that.  I need to organize what I want to post about the event as well as figure out how I want to grab some assets.

I’m assuming almost all of my posts will be Proseka-Evillious related in the near future, so here’s to getting the details out to everyone!
